Sometimes writer's block only means you can't figure out where to go next on your story. Sometimes I will skip ahead to a scene I know is going to happen. You may get inspiration writing that scene to go back and pick it up. And you can always rewrite. I think a lot of writers get blocked because they want to get as close as they can the first time. Maybe all that labor helps you figure out a better way. (less)

I don't think people have ever lived in a time more saturated by narrative - fiction and non-fiction. Fairy tales. True Crime. Science fiction. Horror. Romance. Biography. Sometimes the best thing about being a writer is listening to somebody else's story. How would you tell it? What can you learn from their telling? Does this help anyone get a little further down the road? (less)

A Requiem for Logan Roy

Logan Roy's entrance into the second episode of "Succession" begins with a question: "Why does everybody ask how I'm doing?"

It now looks like a signal to the audience of what's to come. Of course, the question hovering over all four seasons of "Succession" is the mortality of Logan Roy (Brian Cox) and which of his children will succeed him at the head of his companies. Or, perhaps, none of th

The Acceptance World by Anthony Powell

Better in tone than the first two volumes, as the association of Nick and Jean grows closer, and the appreciation of the passage of time begins to become more pronounced.

I heard about this book and got it to see what the fuss was about. The first few pages prepared me for an overly precious, extremely female story that I would have to force myself through. (Don't hold this appraisal against me). My biggest gripe - I' ...more

There's something refreshing about the parade of parties Jenkins takes, the people who get roped into them, and the way he keeps bumping into Widmerpool, who upends all of his suppositions each time. ...more

Josephus and Jesus by T. C. Schmidt

I am not a scholar, but interested in first century sources and extra-Biblical history. So Schmidt's word-by-word dissection of Josephus' paragraph on Jesus was interesting, but a little more than someone with no background in Greek was prepared for. ...more

I came to this book totally ignorant of the general storyline, and I aim to keep it this way as I make my way through the series. Like most Americans, what I know of this world has been gleaned mainly from other novels and prestige television.

This is my first Pynchon, and I finished it on my third attempt. It's not for everyone. Pynchon's plots seem barely disguised set ups for the puns, ironic names, and elaborate jokes he constructs that one occasionally needs a slide rule to plot out t ...more

Fear of Flying by Erica Jong

This novel is a relic of the late sixties, early seventies - so the geography feels well worn by now. Revolution in the air and in the bed, but I was surprised at the main character's origin story as an English lit grad student. Readers may come for ...more
