People first elected noted Iranian engineer and politician Mahmoud Ahmadinejad president with confrontational stance toward the west in 2005; a widely disputed vote reelected him in 2009.

The sixth of the Islamic republic, and the main political leader of the Alliance of Builders of Islamic Iran, a coalition of conservative political groups in the country.

A teacher from a poor background, Ahmadinejad joined the Office for Strengthening Unity after the Islamic Revolution.
