I began my professional life as a first-grade teacher, and quickly fell in love with the whole wide world of learning -- particularly learning how to learn, and how to love learning. Our favorite authors must share that love. My published biographical notes show that I moved through the ranks of public instruction- including administration, curriculum design, and more--, then followed the Divine prompt to start my own leadership firm -- mostly for the private sector, Fortune 500 types. I still serve in an advisory, ombudsman-"sounding board" fashion, still love that work, sensing that, in a way, we're somehow all just kids at heart, living in a lesson world, and learning our greater strengths, capacities, wisdom every day.

Upon arriving, I'd seek out George Smiley, le Carre's most fully developed and popular spy. In my fantasy, we two would hit it off. We'd head out for an espresso at a local, unassuming bistro, and while sipping the hot, bracing beverage, we'd sit together in amiable silence. Simley, I believe, is a natural "casual contemplative" -- as am I -- and thus perfectly comfortable without chit chat.
Having found a kindred spirit, we two would simply be.

Such was the case, it is said, for Pope John Paul II and Mother Teresa. The two admired each other. They were friends. When Mother Teresa visited Rome, she and the Pope would walk around the grounds of the Vatican.
They didn't speak, observers noted, but strolled along, each contemplating private thoughts, perfectly at ease in the amiable silence. Just so, I have felt, when friends and I, usually the ones I love most, can be together in that pure and simple way. Thank you for the question, which was lovely to consider.(less)

Just so, for me, given the sort of life I lead - -contemplative, reflective, very quiet -- lets me focus on the ideas, books, music, work that I love.

Ideas flow freely when I'm praying and meditating, gardening, out for walks, reading, watching movies, day dreaming -- particularly when relaxed and "looking the other way." Almost anything, a color, a cartoon, something a friend says - like a casual remark - - even a billboard ad can inspire me.

I am easily inspired. Not so much when paying bills, waiting for my turn at the doctor or dentist. And fear, anxieties, troubles my friends or family may have - and my own trials ---seem counter productive to the ideas and inspirations I need for creative work or solving problems. While it's true that "necessity is the mother of invention," the negative emotions tear down that gossamer web of inspiration.
