Great review!
Highly favourable review of Phoenix: The Life of Norman Bethune in the Toronto Globe and Mail today. Our son-in-law, who is in public relations, says the Globe is "the big dog in our media backyard." So this is very good news for us. And the review is by Dr. Michael Bliss, an expert in Canadian medical history. Our fifteen minutes of fame?

Post-launch ennui
One of the strangest phases in the process of having a book published is the waiting period for reviews after the book comes out. In the case of Phoenix: The Life of Norman Bethune, getting the manuscript ready for the publisher was all-consuming because as well as polishing the text we had to format endless footnotes and create an index. (I swear my co-author and I came as close to divorce as we will ever come over those wretched but utterly necessary footnotes.) As for the Index, it took 100 hours to create and was fiendishly complicated. Then came the editing process, which was exacting in a totally different way, and in addition we had to search for photographs and provide detailed specs in order to have maps made. Once the book was off to McGill-Queens University Press we waited breathlessly for it to be published. It was a thrill to receive the first copy and great fun to look forward to the excitement of the launch. But after two years of frenetic activity we're suddenly in passive mode waiting for reviews. There have already been some, mostly good, and we have good hopes of more to come. But it's hard to avoid the feeling that it's time to take down the party decorations and sweep up the confetti. I guess I need a new project: See my discussion question under Wolf Rider.

Reviewed in China!
Wonderful review in China Daily, the largest English-language newspaper in China! Maybe someday a Chinese translation of our book? ;)

An Upcoming Review--Maybe!
Our publisher hints that maybe, just maybe, Phoenix: The Life of Norman Bethune might be reviewed in a major newspaper. This could influence sales a lot. We're already hanging by our fingernails--do we now have to hold our breaths too?
