A while back, I came across an article from a newspaper from early in the 20th C. (maybe the 1920s). It briefly stated that a Gundar Terlson had perished in a blizzard in Wisconsin. I have often wondered about the events, or the mystery, of how that happened. Why was he out there? Was he looking for something or someone? What events in his life led him to this sad death?

Maybe some day I'll write that.(less)

A sneak peek at Luke 3

The brown strips of panelling made the room look more like someone’s basement drinking room than a bar. On entering, he’d expected to see a Lazy Boy and a plaid ottoman shoved in the corner— instead, worn out tables were filled with circle fossils as memories of beers gone past. A jukebox sat sentinel-like in the corner, but it must have stopped working, as a ghetto blaster played the local yo

Samurai Bluegrass by Craig Terlson
"This is a strange and wonderful story that showcases, through seemingly effortless prose and beautifully realised characters, a clear and affecting love of Toronto, of feudal Japan and bushido, of art and music and the rhythms of city life. And while" Read more of this review »

James Maxwell knows how to write. His prose is tight, compressed, and muscular. Not sure what that term quite means, but it fits. He's quite brilliant at setting a scene and a vibe. You can smell gunpowder in the air, whiskey in a glass, and blood dr ...more

“We left the diner for another long walk along the lake. The sky had lightened the last couple of days, making me think that Ontonagon was a Michigan paradise tucked up in its northern corner. But today, racks of clouds as big as steamships parked themselves above us, giving the whole town the grey murkiness I'd grown used to. Wind came off Lake Superior, bypassed my skin and veins, and dug right into my bones. We stopped at one of the benches along the lakeshore. Pieces of driftwood were scattered across the sand like they'd been tossed there long ago by some burly creature or god. My mind drifted to the sort of gods that would inhabit Upper Michigan, tough ones to be sure. No grape-eating lounging Greeks; these gods would be plaid-wearing giants as big as pine trees who waded into Superior's violent water for a morning dip.”
Craig Terlson, Manistique
