General Cao Văn Viên was an officer in the Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN). After commanding the Vietnamese Airborne Division as a Colonel, he eventually rose to the position of Chairman of the South Vietnamese Joint General Staff, which position he held for nearly a decade, from October 1965 until the collapse of the republic in April 1975. He also concurrently served as Defense Minister between January & November 1967. He was one of only two four-star generals in the entire history of South Vietnam (the other one was Trần Thiện Khiêm).
