Helen St. Clair is a writer, researcher, poet, and lifelong North Carolinian. She holds a deep fascination with forgotten history — particularly the stories of women and children whose lives and deaths were never fully recorded.

The Killing Trails: Two Centuries of Violence Against the Women of Western North Carolina is the first volume in her series, The Unrecorded Dead. Drawing on court records, newspaper archives, and public documents, the book chronicles more than 150 murders and disappearances across 23 mountain counties from 1808 to 2025 — from frontier-era folklore to modern cold cases with active rewards.

Future volumes will continue east across the state, with a national volume to follow.
