MIPCOM / MIPJunior 2010 - the end of the book
I have just returned from MIPjunior and MIPCOM the worlds largest media festival for kids entertainment and largest television distribution market. Things are looking gloomy for the book in the future: I heard publishers, pundits and new content speakers talking about the book. It seems as adult books move to become ebooks, kids books are going to turn into games. This is not a market that many traditional children's, tween and young adult authors can easily penetrate.
Whereas in the past an $11k investment was required for a new book this will go up to $50k at least, and may mean writing may become exclusively a professional career path from university rather than an author sitting at home in front of a word processor hoping to be discovered. I was amused to here from one speaker that they sit down a group of geeky authors and geeky techis in a room and get great material back. These new interactive books will be more computer game that book with edutainment built in. Users will be able to see with new technology images projected in real space and there own appearance changed in the mirror. This id only the beginning.
