Kathy Mansfield enjoys life with her husband, Rick. Kathy is originally from Louisiana but has called Kentucky her home for the last 27 years. She is an award-winning school librarian who served as elementary library media specialist in four different Kentucky schools, running the gamut from inner city to suburban to rural. Kathy recently retired as the library media/textbooks consultant for the KY Department of Education.

Kathy's love of poetry began at an early age, but she didn't start writing her own poems until she was an adult. Inspiration for her Bible poetry came from summers spent with her grandma in Arkansas. "Grandma and I would talk about different Bible stories and about how important God was in our lives. I started to make poem

Thanks for your question! My audience is typically children, and as a children's librarian I read and enjoy a great deal of rhymed poetry and picture books. I love the rhythm of rhymed poetry and how ideas conveyed in rhyme can be easily recalled. Dr. Seuss would certainly be one of those inspirations for me early on. Kenn Nesbitt (poetry4kids.com) is a current favorite of mine. I shared his poetry often with my students. I also enjoy George Ella Lyon's work (current KY poet laureate). Her descriptive language is powerful.

Calvin Miller was a major influence for me as I began writing Bible-themed rhymed poetry. I discovered his Apples, Snakes, and Bellyaches over 20 years ago while on vacation. I still remember laughing out loud when I read "Solomon Sore Lips" for the first time! T. S. Eliot's Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats is a favorite of mine and was definitely an influence, too.

I do enjoy free verse and other creative poetry, but rhymed is still my favorite. A recent free verse favorite is Crossover by Kwame Alexander (2015 Newbery Award winner). I loved reading Out of the Dust by Karen Hesse with students (1998 Newbery Award winner). I experienced a new appreciation for free verse from that particular work. Spoon River Anthology by Edgar Lee Masters is a stand out in my mind from high school. I was fascinated by the way he told an engaging story about an entire town in that unique way.

Thanks, again, for your question!

As a 25-year school library veteran, I can attest to the joys and the frustrations of the role. I hope that school librarians will see themselves in the pages and can even laugh along at some of the poems.(less)

For Such a Time as This

“For such a time as this . . .” – famous words from Mordecai to Esther in the Bible. I’ve recalled those words when I’ve been in unique situations, whether jobs or encounters with friends, wondering if God placed me in those circumstances for a particular reason and impact.

A couple of weeks ago I found a new appreciation for those words. I was attending a conference for work and found myself bemo Read more of this blog post »
