Why did you write JACK K9 WARRIOR?

Like millions of adults and children over the years, I fell in love with Collies at an early age. When I was about five, we had a mahogany Collie named Macintosh (after the red apple) He was a wild one. We lived in a more rural area at the time, surrounded by farms and Mac would run off sometimes for days at a time and chase rabbits and other small game. He often got in trouble for chasing one neighbor's sheep and on one occasion, came back with some buck shot in his back end.

In my teen years, we had Lad, whom my sister named after Lad from the Terhune novel Lad: A Dog. Now we have Jack. But obviously Lassie and the Terhune books are what made many people come to know and love this wonderful breed. As Jack grew and experienced some of the things in his life, I realized that I felt like I was living in the middle a Collie story. It didn't take much to put real-life on paper and create "Jack". I also felt that since Terhune died in 1942 and Eric Knight (the creator of Lassie) died a few years after that, there had really been no novels of that type for quite a while. Yes there were Lassie movies and TV shows, but no full-length novels as in the past. So this is my attempt to contribute to this wonderful classic genre.

A must read! 5-Star Review

Mary Courtade writes ...

Jack K9 Warrior is an exciting and heartwarming story about the adventures of Captain Jack, a gorgeous tri-color collie puppy that comes into his family’s life as a Christmas present. Being a typical collie, Jack is intelligent, fearless, loyal, lovable and nosey. Jack’s adventures continue as he travels overseas with a U.S. task force and becomes a canine hero. This book is a must read for all dog lovers, not just those already owned by collies!

Mary thanks for the 5-star review of my book JACK K9 WARRIOR!

Write for the Gold!

Jack K9 Warrior by Kevin L. Brett It's official! I've entered the 2014 Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award. My newest book, Jack K9 Warrior is now entered in the General Fiction category.

I worked with UK author Jacky Gray to shape up the 300 word pitch. Jacky was a huge help and taught me much! Phew, writing the book was easier than those few short paragraphs, but the 'pitch' is key to getting reviewers, agents and publishers interested and wanting more.

So here's the pitch:
----
Being around Lieutenant Dakota Dixon (DX to his friends) means being on your toes or you might just find something unpleasant in your combat boots! Something in his Native American psyche gives him a special connection with dogs, gaining him a new handle – dog whisperer. Keith Barnes’s idea of a storybook home life takes a major detour as his Collie, Jack, turns therapy dog and becomes the new training partner for DX as he struggles through rehab.

Before his platoon was ambushed, DX was on track to realize his vision of training a revolutionary breed of K9 warrior, but now he faces a medical discharge. Jack and DX’s destinies become one, as Keith encourages his new friend to test his theories on Jack. Pairing this Marine with the mischievous Jack is just trouble waiting to happen!

Impressed with Jack’s new abilities, the leader of an elite unit gives DX a second chance. Realizing DX’s future depends on Jack’s skills, Keith makes the difficult decision to loan the Collie for a dangerous mission. The team must recover a stolen laser weapon from an abandoned castle in the mountains of Romania to rescue the country from an impending coup. Combining instincts and training, Jack saves one of the agents from a wolf, takes out a sniper, and relays vital information about a mole who threatens the success of the mission.

Surrounded by double agents and espionage, DX doesn’t know who he can trust as the team is nearly wiped out. JACK K9 WARRIOR is a suspenseful revival of the classic Collie stories of old and an uplifting tale of friendship and sacrifice.
