Got a title? Need a title!

Blech, how I hate coming up with titles. For articles, books, even blog posts. And then when my editor asks for sub-headers? URRRGGH. I worked with one editor, whom I loved, but who always asked me to submit not one, not two, but FOUR possible headlines for every article I submitted. No joke — I(...)

Fonts, fonts, fonts!

Title says it all. If you know anything about me, you know I love fonts. If you don’t know anything about me, now you do: I love fonts. It makes sense, really. I’m a writer, so I love words. I dabble in design, so I love things that look cool. Words + design = fontaholism.(...)

Maya and my kid, part two

Read part one here if you missed it! Six weeks after I interviewed Dr. Maya Angelou, I was talking with my friend on my cell phone. At that time, we still had a land line, and it was still on an answering machine — gasp! ‘member those? — where you could listen to the message(...)

Maya and my kid, part one

For many years, I worked for a publication that adored putting celebrities on the cover. Because I’ve always run my biz with a healthy sense of delusion, I was all, “Okay! I’ll get you some celebs!” and then I’d proceed to naively reach out to celebs to interview. Many of them ignored my requests. Happily,(...)

Let the blogathon begin!

Blogging has never been my thang; one more ball to juggle, and I haven’t ever really hit my stride in terms of…y’know…what to actually hang my hat on as a topic. It might be a peril of having a creative mind. Or maybe a very ADD mind? In any event, Freelance Success and WordCount (two(...)

Creating Disney magic at home

If there’s one word tightly intertwined with Disney, it’s “magic.” You feel it the minute you cross over from the outside world onto park property. It’s there when you see the castle rising up in front of you, and when you push the key into the lock at your resort. It’s intangible, undeniable…and you feel(...)

Evolution of a book cover

As I mentioned the other day, I’m noodling around with ideas for a cover for my upcoming young adult novel, SHE. What’s going to be interesting (to me, anyway!) is seeing the final idea — because, like everything else, it’s never a straight line from concept to finished product. As Exhibit A, I offer the(...)

Help me design a book cover for my upcoming novel!

My upcoming YA novel is coming along in lurches and stalls and lunges. It’s a departure from my usual approach to fiction — which is a light-hearted, fun romp kind of approach — this one’s a thinky kind of story. Turns out, thinking is harrrrrd. So, I thought I’d take a break and fool around(...)

Age-by-age guide to letting kids help plan your Disney vacation

In honor of the newly-released digital version of WALT DISNEY WORLD EXTREME VACATION GUIDE FOR KIDS, here’s a throw-back article I did a couple years ago for a Disney site on an age-by-age guide on how kids can help prep for a Disney trip: Tired of spending hours buried under piles of brochures and logging(...)
