Continuing on, Chapter 3 of “Juncture” is now up. Fiction? Yes -- and no. The oceans are changing, and we are truly at a juncture.

Cheeseheads


The eight divers were from Green Bay, Wisconsin, men in their fifties, who, back when they had hair and incaution, were fraternity brothers. Given a choice Cedar preferred women divers, but diving, generally for the worse, remained a man’s sport. Women paid attention to what they were doing and listened to instructions. In ten years Cedar had never had a woman jump in without a weight belt or a mask. Over the same ten years she’d seen men do both, and far worse, on a daily basis...

Oh yes, he was a different man with his hubris stripped away. I let him scream before I took him carefully apart, as if I might put him together again. He lay upon the sea, conscious of the jigsaw pieces floating about him.

Cedar thought of Steinbeck’s sadly beautiful ending; George lifting the pistol from his jacket, speaking softly as Lennie looked out to the river, soft rabbits hopping in his mind.

So many things we would like to go one way, so easily go another.
