From more recent works, though, I have to say I love Karou and Akiva from Laini Taylor's fantastic Daughter of Smoke and Bone series, and Nazafareen and Darius from Kat Ross's The Fourth Element series.(less)

There are time when I can't make progress, but those invariably have to do with life circumstances preventing me from writing, or from something in what I have previously written, so that I have to go back and fix it before I can move forward, and I just haven't figured it out yet. A writer is not a machine; even someone with no other obligations cannot just write and write and write nonstop for eight hours a day, seven days a week, without pause. We all need fallow periods.(less)

Genuinely, I like this one better than the first book: more polished, no less brutal but somehow more moral (question mark?) or at least ethical (from a certain point of view) on the part of our boys. Or at least, they spend a little more time thinki ...more

Adorable, charmingly written, with a sort of bubbly quirkiness that was soothing to read. Light on story, it read more as a series of vignettes than a novel proper, but the vignettes were enjoyable, the characters quaint and charming, and the st

Robin McKinley
“I don't put up with being messed around, and I don't suffer fools gladly. The short version of that is that I'm a bitch. Trust me, I can provide character references.”
Robin McKinley, Sunshine

H. Jackson Brown Jr.
“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”
H. Jackson Brown Jr., P.S. I Love You

Sarah Rees Brennan
“I expected something a little more castle-shaped," said Jamie.
Nothing lasts forever," Nick said. "Except demons, of course."
Has anyone ever told you that you're a charming conversationalist?" Jamie asked.
No," Nick replied honestly.
I cannot tell you how much that surprises me," Jamie told him, and Nick gave him a half smile.”
Sarah Rees Brennan, The Demon's Lexicon

Sarah Rees Brennan
“Fear's useless. Either something bad happens or it doesn't: If it doesn't, you've wasted time being afraid, and if it does, you've wasted time that you could have spent sharpening your weapons.”
Sarah Rees Brennan, The Demon's Lexicon

Megan Whalen Turner
“If I am the pawn of the gods, it is because they know me so well, not because they make my mind up for me.”
Megan Whalen Turner, The Queen of Attolia
