Unique. I read it in my late 20s. I was obsessed with it the same way I was obsessed with Titus Groan. A friend said there are 2 types of people in the world: those who have read Voyage to Arcturus, and those who haven't. ...more

It's so gritty and real and smart that it doesn't feel like the future at all. It's the future we're currently entering. I'm already seeing the 'earth suits' that Stephenson invents in this novel. ...more

Messy and very strange. Cynical or grittily realistic, despite the crazy premise. I love the chapters in Buckingham Palace.

Very sexist, even misogynist, especially in the final part.

The original story, which takes up the first part of the book, is a masterpiece. Read it for the spiders.

Henry David Thoreau
“The animal merely makes a bed, which he warms with his body in a sheltered place; but man, having discovered fire, boxes up some air in a spacious apartment, and warms that, instead of robbing himself, makes that his bed, in which he can move about divested of more cumbrous clothing, maintain a kind of summer in the midst of winter, and by means of windows even admit the light and with a lamp lengthen out the day.”
Henry David Thoreau
