Advice for aspiring writers

I'm often asked, "What's your advice for aspiring writers?"

The most important thing new writers can do is to believe in themselves, sit down, and write! It's great to learn all you can about the craft of writing, but it's more important to actually do it.The French War Bride

Here's why: if you want to write, that no doubt means you're an avid reader. Through years and years of reading, you've absorbed more about story structure than you realize.

I also believe that you wouldn't want to write if you didn't have the talent. No one would choose to spend huge chunks of time alone in front of a blank computer screen making stuff up out of the blue if they didn't feel a calling for it. There are just too many other fun things to do!

Writing is both an art and a craft, so if you're serious about writing fiction, it's important you learn all you can about the craft. When I finally decided it was time to act on my dream, I took a course, joined a writing organization, formed a critique group with fellow aspiring writers, and bought a bunch of books about writing.

But most importantly, I sat down and started writing. None of the things I was learning would have had any meaning if I hadn't put them into practice. It's like learning to paint; you can study the masters, you can collect the supplies, you can read books about technique, but until you pick up the brush and try to do it yourself, what you're learning won't really have any impact.

So that's what I recommend to aspiring writers. Believe in yourself, sit down and write!
