In 1969, South Beach was God's waiting room
, South Beach was called God's waiting room. Unlike its glitzy image today, back in the sixties the lower end of Miami Beach was a collection of cramped, cheap hotels where senior citizens from the north came to spend their last days. The glamorous part of Miami Beach in those days was farther north along the Miracle Mile where new, skyscraper hotels like the Fontainebleau and Eden Roc had sprouted along Collins Avenue.
Set in 1969, follows the madcap travails of two flaky hippies on a spur-of-the moment road trip who stumble onto a multiple murder and become the prime suspects.

In 1969, cat memes, chat rooms and spam were conceived
In 1969, the Internet made its debut as Arpanet, a message board between four universities. As professors huddled anxiously around computers the size of small cars, the first computer network message was sent.
The network's inception, however, was immediately accompanied by a false rumor: Arpanet was an attempt to maintain military communication during a nuclear war. In many ways, not much has changed since then.
Along with the limitless bounty of the Internet, the world wide web has also morphed into a sea of crackpot conspiracy theories, fake news, cat memes and spam for erectile dysfunction cures.

In 1969: 40 million watched him wed Miss Vicky
In 1969, a bizarre crooner with a voice like a strangled cat known as Tiny Tim tied the knot with Miss Vicky, his 17-year-old bride, before a live television audience on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. The awkward ceremony drew over 40 million viewers. (For perspective, the #1 late-night television host of 2021, Stephen Colbert, averaged just under 3 million viewers per night. )
After exchanging vows, Tiny Tim and Miss Vicky turned down the celebratory glass of champagne offered by Carson, preferring to drink milk with honey instead. The show’s occasionally inebriated co-host Ed McMahon gladly accepted the bubbly they refused.
To this day, the wedding stands as a reminder that love knows no boundaries, not even ones of reason or good taste.

Much More Interesting When Stoned
In the late 1960s, most crash pads rocked this “TV set for hippies.” Invented in Britain as a fashionable curiosity in 1963, the Lava Lite lamp caught on big-time among young U.S. stoners who often found themselves spellbound by its languid movements. Today, most would probably say this crash pad fixture was much more interesting when stoned.

In 1969: Hendrix covered Francis Scott Key’s landmark hit
In 1969, on the last day of the legendary Woodstock music festival and with most of the crowd already gone, Jimi Hendrix closed the event with a cacophonous, acid rock rendition of the Star-Spangled Banner.
Some were offended. They called it “a rape of the national anthem.” Others felt the performance was a protest against "an unnecessary war and an affirmation of aspects of the American experiment entirely worth fighting for."
Regardless of its political implications, based solely on musical innovation, creativity and raw talent, Hendrix's iconic performance at Woodstock in 1969 has lived far beyond his 27 years on earth.

In 1969: Big Bird and Company Hit the Street
In 1969, the creators of Sesame Street launched a children’s television show that would “master the addictive qualities of television” to help young children prepare for school.

In 1969: The Fab Four Released A Magnum Opus
In 1969, the Beatles released their masterpiece, Abbey Road. Considered by many critics to be the Beatles’ magnum opus, Abbey Road was a masterful compilation recorded over four months. The first side of the album is rich in diverse songs by Lennon/McCartney and George Harrison.
In contrast, the second side of the album becomes a seamless blending of compositions that create a symphonic structure. Matching the music’s impact, the cover has become an iconic image imitated countless times in contemporary culture.
