One problem in writing historical fiction is incorporating the history into the fiction without bogging down the story. The story has to keep moving, and it's tempting to stop it while you explain to the reader what is going on outside the story. Sometimes you just have to do it. For instance, in SWEET BETSY FROM PIKE I had to stop the action to explain how gold was mined in that place at that time. That was necessary to explain why Ike wanted to quit mining: it was becoming more dangerous.
