"A frustrating, high-concept piece of writing. It was beautifully-written and I appreciate it was clever, but it was not my cup of tea.
I was unfamiliar with Kitamura’s work going into this, which was likely an error on my part. Had I known the author " Read more of this review » |

"I'll be honest--I don't know that I understand all that was going on here but this is sublime writing from one word to the next, from the first word to the last. "

"So much of this novel feels relatable: I moved back to Ohio in my 50s and ended up living for a while in my mother's house, working at a Big Box store and trying to figure out the next chapter of my life while feeling that perhaps there would not be "

“Music expresses that which cannot be said and on which it is impossible to be silent.”

“Just the other day, I was in my neighborhood Starbucks, waiting for the post office to open. I was enjoying a chocolatey cafe mocha when it occurred to me that to drink a mocha is to gulp down the entire history of the New World. From the Spanish exportation of Aztec cacao, and the Dutch invention of the chemical process for making cocoa, on down to the capitalist empire of Hershey, PA, and the lifestyle marketing of Seattle's Starbucks, the modern mocha is a bittersweet concoction of imperialism, genocide, invention, and consumerism served with whipped cream on top.”

“What I say is, a town isn’t a town without a bookstore. It may call itself a town, but unless it’s got a bookstore, it knows it’s not foolin’ a soul.”

How cool that you have gay books and my friend Lynda Mapes' tree book in your list. I met Peter Hujar in the 1970s will look at your book some time soon. You might enjoy my recently published autobiography, "Left, Gay & Green; A Writer's Life." Some reviews and other info on Amazon.com about my book, and others I have done. I'm new on Goodreads. Best wishes to you.

Cheers, Steve
