‘Tis the Season to Feel Guilty
Every holiday season, do you think THIS year will be the best ever only to be wracked with guilt because you've fallen short? David's got your back.

My Problem with Balls

I have a problem with balls. I can’t catch them, I can’t hold on to them, and I certainly can’t throw them. But apparently, balls don’t have a problem with me. They seem drawn to me. I could be walking by a playing field, a tennis court, even a neighbor’s yard, and balls of all sorts would inevitably seek me out.
This unusual Law of Attraction started the summer when I was 11 years old and played right field in the Swansea...

They’re Alive!

“They’re alive! They’re ALIVE!” I screamed with demented scientist glee. “Now I know what it feels like to be God!”
Sorry. I couldn’t help myself.
When I left for NYC earlier in the week, I was certain my little farmer-in-the-dell exercise of growing vegetables and herbs from seeds would be for naught. I expected to find dry plugs of dirt in the pots I’d planted, with perhaps a few...

How to Buy a Thanksgiving Turkey
Are you wondering when you should buy your Thanksgiving turkey? What size to get? How to store it? Or what the hell all those different labels mean? Fear not. We’ve got you covered.

This month, millions of us will find ourselves standing, dazed and confused, at butcher shops, supermarkets, hoity-toity gourmet stores, and farmers’ markets, wondering how to buy a turkey.

A Man and His Stove
David recounts his experience purchasing his first beloved Viking stove, which he affectionately nicknamed Thor, and after 20 years finds out the stove’s fate.

Since 2002, countless people have asked me how Thor was holding up. For the past 16 years, I wasn’t able to answer; we moved to the next town over in 2006.
Thor has often crossed my mind in the intervening time. The One and I have...

How To Grill Salmon
To learn how to grill salmon so that it’s flaky and tender yet doesn’t fall through the grill, David Leite turned to grilling guru Jamie Purviance for simple, accessible, foolproof tips and tricks that you can take to your backyard.

The third and final installment of my great afternoon of grilling with Jamie Purviance triptych, which began with me learning how to grill steak and continued with how to make rotisserie chicken,...

Spanish Cod Fritters ~ Buñuelos de Bacalao
These Spanish salt cod fritters, called buñuelos de bacalao, are light, crunchy, and just the right amount of salty. They’re the perfect starter or cocktail party bite.

As you know, I’m a thoroughbred Portuguese, both sides of the family are from the Azores for as way back as anyone can remember.
And one of the things I adore are bolinhos de bacalhau, or salt cod fritters. It would be considered cultural treason if I...

Some Like It Pink: Classic Sno Balls

Hostess Sno Balls always remind me of Cheryl Swanson, our high school pep-squad leader who was fond of tight, hot-pink Angora sweaters. It was the late ’70s and the retro ’50s look was in, so all of us were desperate to resemble someone from Happy Days or Grease. I think she was going for one of Richie’s perky, pearl-draped girlfriends. And although these coconut-covered Sno Balls never reached the apotheosis of...

How to Make Hummingbird Nectar
Making hummingbird nectar is simple, quick, and can turn you into the sugar daddy of your own backyard. Just ask David.

If you’ve visited Leite’s Culinaria even a few times, chances are you’ve discovered I’m known as Fatty Daddy. It’s a nickname I carry with pride–not so much as a nod to my porkly padding but rather for the affection with which it’s uttered by my worshipful staff. [Editor’s Note:...
