2023 Year in Review

In 2023, I started a new pen name, published 3 books, and protected my mental health. I call that a win. A purple hunter, a bronze thief, and a blue hero fell in love with a girl from Los Angeles, a woman from Vegas, and a very special heroine from South Africa.

Total words: 215,000 (840 pages)

Books in lifetime: 16, 17, 18

Copies sold: 4,500

Goodreads reviews: 62 (average rating of 4.15 stars)

Amazon followers: 281

Mailing list: 1,200

My first discreet paperbacks:

I made a modest profit and covered all the expenses of production. Most importantly, it was great for my mental health. Some unique challenges popped up this year with my family, and planet Aziza was the perfect escape.

My goal for 2024 is to double all these numbers (at least), expand the world, and explore the orc culture. We’re gonna save more human women and create some very satisfying love stories. I can’t wait to share it all with you.

Follow this blog to watch the magic happen. Thank you to everyone who supported my journey this year. Special thanks to Mama (Jenn) Rednax and Laura Stapleton/Mara Jaye for being steadfast friends through the good and bad times. It helped more than you know. (Big hugs from Vonne, Tor, and Skoll.)

You can find the Horned Warriors on Amazon and read them free with a Kindle Unlimited subscription.*

Happy reading in 2024,

My Master List

Alexandra Sokoloff has a book (and a class and a Substack blog) called Screenwriting Tricks for Authors. The first step in a new project is to create a master list of movies and books similar to yours and write down what elements of those books and movies that appeal to you.

I’ve done this exercise with each of the 18 books I’ve written over 3 pen names.

As part of my first assignment, I’ve written a discussion of my master list and thought I’d share it here because it helps to share.

My Master List: Fight club, The Sound of Music, Kristen Ashley books, JB Salsbury books, Priest by Sierra Simone book

I write sci-fi romance as Lyra Stark and military romance as Bex Dane. I’ve written and published 18 books since 2018. Yay.

I have used Alex’s methods from day one with my first book (Rogan), and I still have the same books on my Master List. None of my books sell all that great, but they sell better the more effort I put into making them marketable and competitive.

I’m currently revisiting my Master List, reading and watching movies before I start my 19th book, which will be a Bex Dane Navy SEAL Knight Security book about a promiscuous male with a fake dating trope with his brother’s girl. His name is Magnum and he has appeared in the first three books as a faithful brother in arms. Not so faithful to the women, but he spreads the love around the globe.

Back to the list:

My top two movies are Fight Club and The Sound of Music. Fight Club because I like mistaken identities, bad boys with good hearts, and fist fights over gun fights, and subliminal statements about society and oppression.

TSoM because I like virginal heroines with alpha male captains who tell her what to do and she puts him in his place while also submitting. “Yes, Captain.” (with a wink). This movie also contains the subliminal statements about oppression. “Out there is a woman who will never be a nun.”

My absolute favorite author is Kristen Ashley, and I usually choose one of her books to role model my hero after before I start writing. For this next book, I’m reading the whole River Rain series, but the truth is that it affects me so deeply, I get obsessed, I don’t sleep, and with it being Christmas season, I’m getting a little off-balance.

River Rain on Amazon

The reason I started writing in the first place was because my reading can become obsessive and stressful, making real life difficult. I enjoy being lost in a book too much and the real world is hard too, so I’m always juggling that. I just need to remember to channel my emotions into the book I’m writing and that usually creates some balance. I’ve been happily married with three sorta happy kids for 18 years so it’s working for us.

I’ve analyzed my love for Kristen Ashley extensively over the years too and the main reason I love her is she instantly draws you into that female character.

One of her books starts with “All I wanted was a burrito from Chipotle.” (Then her ex lover walks in while she’s waiting in line). All her books just grip me right away. It’s like crack.

She has complicated and colorful casts of characters who feel like friends, vulnerable alpha male leads, deep, deep wounds that the characters work out together, and unique intimacy in the sex scenes. I adore her even though she’s becoming quite eccentric as she gets older and moves more into chick lit. I guess I’m moving with her. I will pretty much follow her into the abyss at this point.

Another author I love is JB Salsbury and I have determined that I love the fact it really feels like the couple will never make it. It seems impossible until at least 80% sometimes. The way she keeps the tension until the end is just mesmerizing.
JB Salsbury on Amazon

Priest is the forbidden love book from the male POV where he is just absolutely insane for the female. He is so lost, he’s like a teenage puppy and he’s filthy about it. I love it. Priest on Amazon

I’d like to learn how to make my books more like the books and movies above. Friendly female characters, desperate males, incredible tension until the end.

My style is over the top alpha male borderline controversial kinky adventurous stuff! I tried changing it and it failed, so I’m leaning into it! I find when I take more risks and dive deeper into the side characters, the books sell better.

I’m still exploring my Master List for my next book so I will update when I have more, but the process is very emotional for me as I described above.

I haven’t landed on the one thing that I want to add to the next book yet (besides the tropes mentioned above), so I’m floundering right now, but I know it will come eventually, so I’ll keep working on it.

Thanks for reading this blog post. Follow for more updates on Magnum and the KS boys.

He stood from the barrel and walked over to some tack hanging on the wall of the barn. He selected a thick rope and slapped it into his palm in that well-practiced way of a horseman who knew how to use it. "Tie me up."

"Um, what?" I croaked out through the butterflies now clogging my airway.

"If I'm restrained, you'll trust that I won't hurt you, and we can get past this last boundary." He slapped it in his palm again and grinned as he watched my reaction.

"Mmm." My thighs clenched and warmth pooled in my belly. I knew he was being scientific, but why did the thought of him being tied up stir fire between my legs?

This rope idea added a new level to the whole exercise. We weren't just clinical anymore. If I tied him up and touched him, it would be impossible to keep it from turning sexual.

We'd been dancing around it, and I hadn't seen any signs from him until tonight when his eyes heated. That brief look intrigued me, and I was eager to draw it out again. Maybe this was exactly what I needed to finally defeat my fear.

"Okay."

He handed me the rope and walked over to a sort of wooden pommel horse type thing where they stored the saddles. He moved the gear off of it and planted his big body right in the center. The shaktur in the stall behind him let out a soft, throaty nicker. The whole thing was so stunning I simply stared at it for a long time in disbelief that he was making this happen for me. After years of ugliness and darkness, he was offering me beauty and light.

He sat on that wood in an extremely masculine way, thick thighs spread wide, feet resting on the sides of his boots, biceps flexed as he supported the weight of his broad shoulders. It was mesmerizing like watching a bull rider saunter into the pen and climb confidently on top of a wild beast.

I cleared my throat and approached him slowly.

An Excerpt From My Alien Hero

My first female orc snuck up on me and stole my heart, and Ajani’s. We’ll have to get her a hot horned alien soon.

I thought this photo was perfect for this scene when Ajani is making a friend for the first time since her abduction from Earth. It doesn’t matter Glasha is a female orc, they both admire Skoll’s absolutely undeniable appeal. Minor spoilers ahead.

My Alien Hero by Lyra Stark Chapter 13 Unmasked

I dipped the plate into the water slowly. "You think your life is boring and mundane, and then one day it's just gone, and you wish you could have that boring thing back again." I let my hands just soak in the water, feeling the warmth seep into my skin as I stared out the window at the area in front of the ranch house.

It had grown dark outside. Only one pale blue light shined down over a ring of boulders. Several orcs walked up to the circle and began talking. When a blue alien approached them, they all turned to greet him. "Who is that?"

Glasha moved up next to me to peer out the window. "Tobian is the manager of the animals, and you met Bazur. The other orcs you will meet later."

"Not the orcs, the blue one. Who is that?" A cobalt blue alien with broad shoulders stood taller than all of the orcs. He was wearing a teal kilt and had long swords strapped to his back with a thick chest strap. His head was covered in a rounded black beanie that folded up over his brow, and his arms and legs were covered with swirling black tattoos.

"Why, that's Skoll, of course."

"He looks different." Like really different. Like hot as fuck mountain man gorgeous compared to his reserved black leather uniform and the silver helmet. He even had long blue hair that hung down to his shoulders. Had that been in his helmet the entire time?

He turned his back toward me and swished a familiar blue tail, but now it was adorned with brass rings. Black splotches covered the giant expanse of his shoulders and arms. I couldn't make out the tattoos, but they moved with his muscles as he patted the orcs on their shoulders and stomped his ringed tail.

We watched silently as he wrapped both arms around a huge chunk of wood and balanced it atop a flat boulder. He gracefully pulled an axe from his belt, lined up, and then swung at it with a loud grunt. He hit it right in the center with a booming crack I could hear through the closed window. It split easily into two equal halves that tumbled to the ground. Skoll breathed heavily as the orcs restacked them for him to chop in half again. The orcs picked up the wooden wedges and threw them in a pit in the center of the boulders.

Glasha sighed and leaned her hip on the counter as she gazed out the window at him chopping wood as easily as if it were made of butter. "Aye. He's a bonnie lad. He looks good back in his home wearing his traditional clothing."

"Really good." My breathing became rough and my skin tingled.

"Mmm." Glasha ran a long green tongue over her lips, lifting it to get over her tusks.

As we gawked, he turned toward us and peered in the window. We pivoted away like we'd been caught peeking at dirty magazines. She gasped and ducked down below the counter. I coughed uncontrollably and met her on the floor of the kitchen. We looked at each other for a second and then we both broke into spontaneous laughter.

"I wasn't looking. You were looking," I said.

She sat on her butt and leaned her head back against the cupboard. "I don't know what yer talking about, lass. I didn't see a thing. I wasn't anywhere near that window. Nope. My face was over there in the pantry."

"You are such a liar." My chest ached with the strain of laughing, and I loved it. Laughter was another one of those things you took for granted until it was gone. I looked at Glasha and placed my hand over hers.

She sucked in air quickly and met my gaze.

"Thank you, Glasha. For everything."

"I didn't do anything, I swear." She pressed her lips together and sputtered a laugh.

We broke into giggles again, but a dark force entered the kitchen and we both stopped cold. Standing in the entryway was a towering blue Zeus in a kilt, swords casting shadows on the floor, stern face scowling down, and brilliant blue eyes glaring at my hand on hers. I pulled it away instantly. I hadn't done anything wrong, but the way he stared at it made me insecure.

"You found something funny, lassies?" Skoll's deep voice came out of the alien, but he looked very different from my guard inside the laboratory. This alien was relaxed, confident, strong, and definitely wouldn't bow to Dagmar or sneak around in the dark with a mouse in his pocket. This alien looked like he was ready to hunt, kill, and eat whatever prey was unlucky to be in his path.

Skoll Cover Reveal and Exclusive Sneak Peek Excerpt

Cut off the horns, unleash the dragon.

Ajani

I'm stuck in a horrible situation, and my only way out is my grumpy blue guard who offers to sneak me out of this research facility under his cloak. To do that, I'll have to wrap my arms and legs around him. As much as I want my freedom, I'm terrified to touch him, and I've been burned by his kind before. But Skoll makes me want to take crazy risks. Maybe even try something reckless like fall in love.

Skoll

I cut off my horns and left the seclusion of my ranch to go undercover in the Dome. The anti-mating hormone I've taken should ensure I don't bond with any of the females I'm attempting to rescue. But I'm caught unprepared when I encounter Ajani, a beautiful captive human who fears all physical contact. She's asked me to help her desensitize so she can escape. If her training doesn't kill me, fighting the bond just might.

My Alien Hero is a steamy full-length, standalone sci-fi romance featuring a reclusive alien scientist who sacrifices everything for his fated mate.

Exclusive Sneak Peek Excerpt

This is an excerpt from my favorite chapter of My Alien Hero (Horned Warriors Book 3 coming soon).

A little history. I first wrote this in June 2023. I cried my eyes out like a baby during the second draft in August 2023, and I loved it so much in October 2023 during the third draft that I felt I had to share it with you.

The context is that Glasha is a female orc on Skoll's ranch who is helping Ajani adjust. She hasn't kissed Skoll yet and they've only shared longing glances. Their relationship is platonic at this point. He rescued her from the Dome, and he's been avoiding her on the ranch. Yes, it's a slow burn. Heldmuis is her pet mouse that hangs out on her shoulder.

I don't know if it will touch you like it does me, but I feel like it's the perfect example of their relationship and her haphephobia (fear of being touched). Ajani also meets Nefer (Yasmine) and Stella for the first time and they have no problem sharing their thoughts on the matter.

Spoilers Ahead. If you wish to remain surprised, skip this next bit!

Chapter 14 Girl Talk (My Alien Hero) (Copyright Lyra Stark)

We worked together quietly as she added broth to the sautéed veggies and stirred it. The smell was very close to those I remembered from home. I knew I shouldn't ask, but I couldn't help myself. The swirl of green in my tummy had flared into a little envious gremlin who desperately needed to know.

"Are you and Skoll mated?" I tried to keep my tone casual, but my voice twisted it into an awkward question.

She dropped her knife and turned her entire body away from me to hide her face. "Skoll will never take a mate. His will is unbreakable on that."

"Oh." I sensed a lot of bitterness in her voice, and I didn't ask more questions, even though curiosity was eating me up inside. I'd already made her uncomfortable, and it was really none of my business what her relationship with Skoll was.

She slowly turned back to her work and picked up another potato, this time chopping the pieces a little too roughly. "Nivveok don't form bonds."

I didn't know what Nivveok meant, and I was about to ask her but she kept talking.

"And he's too noble to mate for physical pleasure even though I'm sure he has intense carnal needs." She looked up at the ceiling, her voice dripping with exasperation. "Don't ask me how I know, but you grow up on a ranch with someone and you find out… things."

"Mmm." I'd clearly hit a nerve with Glasha because her eyes lit up, and she was on a roll now.

"It's fine." She chopped a potato brutally in half, and the knife wedged into the cutting surface. She had to wiggle the handle to get it out. "I'm probably better off with an orc. The Nivveok are too closed. They believe they aren't worthy because of their horns, but Skoll's horns were a thing of beauty."

"He had horns?" I hadn't seen anyone on this planet with horns, and I'd never imagined Skoll had them. But now that she mentioned it, I'd only seen him wearing the helmet or the beanie. I'd never seen his head.

"Gorgeous horns," she said with a deep sigh. "He blew them off in an explosion. All that to go undercover in the Dome." She shook her head. "A fantastic set of double greens, curved back pair, sharp, thick front pair. I might've had some crazy fantasies about them, but I'm not confessing that."

I coughed and stifled a laugh.

"I'm sorry. I've shared too much. Please don't mention any of this to him." She wiped her hands on a towel and pressed a palm to her forehead like she was burning up.

"I won't. I promise." I scooped up the well-chopped potatoes, tossed them into the pot, and watched as they tumbled in the now simmering broth.

"I'm going out to the garden to get some herbs. Will you be a'write here by yourself for a moment?" Glasha asked.

"Of course. I'll stir the curry."

She grinned awkwardly as she headed out the back door, and to be honest, I was grateful to have some time alone.

So much new information about Skoll to process. He once had horns? She'd called them double greens and described them like a ram's horns. I laughed to myself. I couldn't even imagine such a thing, and yet I was on an alien planet. Anything was possible.

And the way she felt about Skoll made me question my own feelings. He would never mate with anyone? He'd told me he'd taken an anti-mating hormone, but my stubborn mind had still spent many nights imagining myself glued to his back on his bike, my hands drifting lower to his pants, smelling his sandalwood scent with my nose near his neck, his tail swishing between my legs. Was I an infatuated school girl just like Glasha? Did I really have no chance with him either?

It didn't matter because I was eventually going back to Earth and leaving Skoll and all his fantastic animals behind. I'd miss this place, but I'd always remember my short time on the alien ranch. Returning home would be scary without Skoll's broad shoulders in front of me warding off the demons, but I'd have to be brave and forge ahead.

A commotion in the main room caused me to fumble the ingredients and drop them awkwardly into the pot. Boiling broth bounced back and burned my hand. "Where is she?" a female voice came excitedly closer as I reached for a cool towel to soothe the ache. "We heard there was a human here."

My heart dropped like a lead weight. They were here to get me. The beautiful virgin. Another set of feet followed behind her in the hallway. An attack. Poachers here to capture me and Heldmuis. I pulled him from my shoulder and dropped him to the floor. "Run!" He scampered along the floorboards, but there was no hole for him to hide in.

I fell to my knees and tried to lift up the flat board on the bottom, but it was secured tight. That's when I felt it. Hands on my back, on my arms, everywhere. A squealing sound pierced my ears.

I thought it was Heldmuis, but the noise came from me.

My throat tightened, and my heart nearly burst from my chest. I couldn't breathe.

The panic gave way to deafening grief. Sadness for the girl I was who was taken from me. The innocence lost at the hand of poachers who stole my youth and my beloved elephant. They'd come back for me. They always did. There was no escaping the terror of it. My life would forever be haunted by them.

And so I began to weep. Uncontrollable sobs into my knees, my hands covering my ears. I was lost and scared and alone again with no defenses to save my sweet Ophelia. I should've brought the knife that Skoll had given me. I didn't even have a gun on this planet. All I had was…

"What the blex is this? Get away from her."

Skoll. I had him. My protector. My hero.

"She can't be touched. You see what you've done? Give her some space. Driff!"

He was here. He'd protect me from whoever had touched me. I could hear his heavy boots stomping into the room and standing in front of me.

"Oh my gosh. I'm so sorry." A woman's voice hit my ears, but I was frozen in place. She had an American accent, and the translator did nothing with her words. She was speaking English.

Feet shuffled away, and silence filled the room like they were all waiting for me to show my face, but now embarrassment was keeping me down. How could I face Skoll again after I'd lost my composure and panicked when there was clearly no threat? He obviously knew these women who spoke English without a translator.

"We won't touch you. I promise. We won't hurt you. We're sorry we scared you. We're just so excited to see another human. We got carried away."

Another human. They were human like me. I sucked in a huge breath, not realizing before how very much I'd missed my own kind.

"Stay back." Skoll's voice protected me like a shield. "Leave now."

"No way, big boy." A sassy voice spoke back to him in a tone I'd never dream of using with a commanding alien like him.

"She needs us," the other female voice said. "We'll wait. She'll be okay soon. I've had panic attacks before. She'll settle and then we'll talk about it. We understand how frightening this all is, but we're really the best people to be here. When you're ready, we'll talk. We won't touch you."

I finally found the courage to look up past Skoll's massive thighs and kilt. I caught sight of a black woman with neatly braided hair and small dark horns. She wore a blue plaid kilt and smiled down at me with compassionate eyes. The other woman also had brown skin, but she looked like she could be Latina or Indian. Straight hair, curvy body, purple kilt, no horns. Both of them were stunning and intimidating despite the friendly smiles.

"My name is Nefer," the one with braids said. "This is Stella. I'm from Los Angeles, and she's from Las Vegas."

"Well, I'm really from Oregon originally. No one wants to claim Vegas as their hometown," Stella added.

"We're bonded to Nivveok warriors." They both smiled, and I noticed they had glowing marks on their necks.

Glasha had just finished telling me that Nivveok like Skoll didn't bond. I swallowed my pride and pushed my hair away from my face. "Hello." I offered them a weak smile, and they returned it with gleaming white teeth. "I'm Ajani from Addo, South Africa."

Skoll continued to glare at them and didn't move out of the way, but they were right. The panic passed, and I was excited to see them too.

I stood and fixed my kilt. "I'm so sorry. That was embarrassing."

Skoll was standing with a dagger in his fist, but he wasn't wielding it at them.

"No. It's our fault. We're far too welcoming, and we forget that any human on this planet is probably traumatized from what they've been through. You were in the Dome, huh?" Stella asked.

Skoll growled, and his fist tightened around the handle of his dagger. "Don't ask her these things."

I reached up and almost placed my fingertips on his shoulder, but thought better of it and pulled back. "It's fine. Yes, I was in the Dome. Skoll helped me escape under his cloak."

"That's awesome. Wait a minute. Wait a goddamn minute." Nefer's head moved side to side almost independently from her neck. Oh, I recognized that move from when my mother used to do it. It meant she was getting ready to lay it out. "You escaped under his cloak? So you touched him?"

"Through our clothes, yes, after lots of practice," I said with a shrug.

Both women turned their gazes slowly toward Skoll. "You know how to help her?" Stella asked.

"Aye."

"But she still can't be touched?" Nefer asked.

"She's safe here."

"Maybe for now, but if she escaped, they're looking for her, and you stopped helping her before she was cured?"

Skoll looked over his shoulder, but his gaze didn't meet mine. Neither one of us had thought to continue touching practice after I'd escaped. The purpose of it was accomplished, and we'd moved on. Or had we?

"That shit is whack." Nefer propped a hand on her hip. "Why'd you give up like that? Huh?" Her tone was exactly like my mother's when she was angry with me. "You know what? Nevermind. I don't care what your fucked up logic was." She pointed a long painted fingernail at Skoll. "You were wrong, and you need to keep working with her and help her continue to improve."

"She's returning to Earth." Skoll crossed his massive arms over his chest like this solved the problem. We hadn't even talked about that yet, but I had a feeling these women weren't buying his bossy routine.

"And you think she doesn't need to fix this before that?" Stella shook her head and made a funny grunting noise. "It's just as dangerous on Earth. If a man gets a hold of her and sees her crumble like that, she's easy game."

Skoll growled, but he didn't move or reply.

"Whether she stays or goes, she needs your help and you need to stand up and do it." Nefer's sharp fingernail pointed at me. "And you need to let him do it."

Character Interview - Vonne Bhuttu

Meet Vonne Bhuttu

Hi, readers. Recently, Dolvena interviewed Vonne Bhuttu when she was considering him for a position as commander of the Nivveok warriors for the Horned Warrior Alliance.

But Vonne had some questionable history and she called him out on it. Most notably, he'd been accused of doing drugs and stuffing a kidnapped human into a sack. Find out what really happened in this interview and discover what Vonne said that made Dolvena thirsty.

If you were Dolvena, would you put your trust in Vonne?

Vonne Bhuttu (Character Interview)

Interviewer: Dolvena of Ditha, architect of the Alliance

Candidate name: Vonne Bhuttu of Western Krassokdro Forest, hunter of beasts and master of swords

Interview date: Two weeks after the battle outside the Dome (My Alien Captor - Chapter 28)

Position being considered: Commander of the Nivveok Warriors of the Horned Warrior Alliance

Warning: This interview may contain spoilers.

Vonne's impressive white horns entered the room before he did. They sparkled in the light and stood proud over his head. His growly presence filled the space like a supernova had come to see me.

"Sit here." I offered him the seat opposite me at my desk. "How are you feeling after the battle?"

His gaze dotted the room, inspecting every little piece of equipment in my office.

"Let's start with how you met Yazmin." I motioned to the chair again, but he remained standing.

He tilted his head and focused his violet eyes on me as he stomped his tail on the floor.

I cleared my throat. I would not be intimidated by his scowl and towering size. That was why he was here; to fight against the bad guys. Grumpy and ferocious were good qualities in a leader.

"You seem skeptical of me. I can understand that, and it might be difficult for you to share the truth, but I'm asking you, for the sake of the forests of Krassoks, to respond openly and honestly to these questions. The leaders of the Alliance will look at all this data and confer if you're fit for duty as commander of other Nivveoks. Just between us, I assure you the odds are in your favor."

His horns tipped as he finally took a seat.

"So, tell me how you came to acquire a bag with a human in it."

"I do not like this question."

Communication had never been easy for Vonne, so I refrained from ordering him to answer and kept my voice indifferent. "I know you don't, but there's been talk that you were high on jigo and shoved a human female into a bag so that you could take her to your cave and hold her captive. Is that true?"

"Nai."

I opened his file and prepared the document that would record his answers. "Well, here's your chance to correct the record. Were you high on jigo-jigo when you met Yazmin?"

"Aye."

"I see." I checked to see that his audible response was noted in the file. "And are you still using jigo?"

"Of course I am not."

"This would be a lot easier if you elaborate, so I don't have to drag the story out of you."

"A'write. It was the darkest moment of my life. Krassoks was decimated. I was alone with no food. I believed I could not safely pass into Vasada to hunt, and there was no prey in Krassoks. My bones were weak. I believed I would die every day."

I kept my eyes down, he was on a roll, so I didn't say anything.

"The jigo was keeping me alive. It was the only thing that made me feel strong. Without meat, I was dying. Kuntar tricked me. Played on my weakness and told me to steal the sack from the Phukas. I didn't know what was in it. I thought it might be perebreum or other weapons. I didn't know it would be alive." His shoulders were stiff and his voice was firm.

"So you did not stuff a human into a sack and run through Krassoks with her?"

"Nai! The Phukas did this to her. I would never do that to any human, especially not my Yazmin. The moment we were somewhere safe, I released her and began to care for her needs."

I nodded and checked that the answers were recorded in the file exactly as he had said them. "Speaking of which, have you ever bitten anyone without permission?"

His brow furrowed deeply. "What has Leehem told you?"

"It is a standard question," I replied.

"What does it matter?" He crossed his massive arms over his chest, the scars crisscrossing like the pattern on his bretten.

I sighed and pleaded with him with my eyes. "Since you haven't responded, I'm going to assume the answer…"

"I have bitten one female in my life and that is my mate. Before I had control of my Rage Monster, before I was even aware it existed, I bit Yazmin without her consent." He gritted out his confession, the guilt lacing his tone.

"And she began to vibrate?"

"That is how it works, Dolvena. Have you never been bitten?"

Something lodged in my throat, and I coughed to clear it. "And, um, how did you, um, what happened when she, uh, vibrated?" I adjusted the sash of my bretten, my neck feeling hot.

His violet eyes darkened to a deep magenta. "That is between my mate and myself, but I can tell you, she begged me to relieve the pressure, and I did so. She was never in danger."

Oh boy. His voice when it went deep sounded downright demonic. Vonne was shockingly handsome in his own unique way. Yazmin was a lucky lady. "Och, aye. A'write then. Um." I took a large gulp of water. "And your scars? How did you get those?"

He rose from his seat and turned away from me. "I do not wish to discuss this with you or anyone."

"Why? Because it's painful?"

He grunted. "And embarrassing. Before Yazmin, my life was very dark. I did things to hurt myself. Because someone had hurt me."

"So you cut your own scales?"

"The scars on my back are from my adopted father, Yemmel. He lashed me in front of others as punishment for my selfishness. The scars on my arms and face are my own doing." His voice faltered with the strain of his words.

"And are you still cutting yourself?" I asked quietly.

"Nai. Yazmin brought me out of that dark place. I don't hurt myself anymore. I… enjoy pleasant things now."

He couldn't see me smile because he was still refusing to look at me. "That's good. I'm happy for you."

"If I will not be forgiven for the errors of my past, then I don't wish to be part of your crew." He took a step toward the door.

"Wait. I can tell you right now, Vonne, you are forgiven," I said to his back. "None of us has an unmarked past. We are all victims here, and I'm impressed how far you've come from where you were."

He pivoted toward me and sat in his chair again, his huge tail flowing over the side. "What else do you wish to know? I have a bondmate waiting for me."

"Let's move on to your Rage Monster. What can you tell me about it?"

"What do you wish to know?"

"How do you control it?"

"I control it by focusing on Yazmin. We have a frequency, a wavelength, and when we are both in tune, the resonance causes it to amplify. The Rage Monster crawls through the waves like a portal. He'll do anything to protect her."

"Mmm. And what powers do you have in that form?"

"I haven't explored them all. So far it appears that I am immune to laser fire. I can communicate telepathically with Yazmin, which can also occur in my normal form, but it's much easier for the Raseri. The Rage Monster has immense power in size and strength and it can wield an extremely hot fire that melts silver helmets from quite a distance, as you know." He raised a brow at me, daring me to bring up his mistake at the last battle.

He'd believed that she had been killed, and he'd burned the building down, nearly killing his brothers who were trying to convince him she was still alive. I decided to leave that one on the table. It was an understandable response and served a dual purpose of intimidating the enemy.

"Impressive. Can your Raseri form fly?"

"It has no wings. I can run quickly in that form. Why? Have you seen Raseri with wings?"

"You are the only Raseri I have ever seen. I just wonder if you could fly."

"I can't, but it doesn't mean others may not have the ability."

I smiled at the possibility. A Raseri that could fly would be even more powerful than Vonne. "And are you willing to give up all that you had on Krassoks to serve the Alliance? Your Raseri would be under your control, but we'd expect your actions to show loyalty to the cause of freeing Krassoks."

"I'm prepared to sacrifice anything as long as Yazmin is safe."

Good. He was loyal to the cause and to his mate. That was the most important part. "Do you wish to be a leader of Nivveok warriors on a mothership until Krassoks is restored? It may take a lifetime to restore it."

"I have always dreamed of leaving this planet. I never imagined I'd be a leader."

"But do you see it now as a possibility?"

"Aye."

"Why?"

"Because Yazmin sees it and she believes in me."

"At your oath ceremony, I will carve the emblem of the Horned Warrior Alliance into your chest in exchange for your loyalty. Are you prepared to go down on one knee and pledge fidelity to your brothers and the cause?"

"It is a scar I would proudly bear."

I stood and put away my digital notepad. "Very good, Vonne. Thank you for your honesty. I look forward to your oath taking."

His eyes lit as he stood, a proud grin growing on his scarred lips.

"Allow me to take this moment to tell you that we are lucky to have you, and we truly appreciate your bravery and sacrifice. I believe with you on our team, we shall defeat the Zul more quickly than anyone anticipates."

"I can only hope to live up to your expectations."

"You already have."

He dipped his head and his tail stomped quietly.

Vonne didn't know it, but his humility was his most charming asset.

He stopped at the door and glanced over his shoulder at me with a smirk dancing on his mouth. "I hope that soon you will know what it is like to be bitten by a horned warrior, and you will not have to stutter when you ask. You will know." He winked and strutted down the corridor with his massive tail swishing behind him.

Good Zenas, my stomach flip-flopped and my skin burned.

I downed an entire quart of cold water and filled my vessel up again and drank that. I suddenly had an unquenchable thirst.

"Giant unicorn tentacle cock you say? Okay, so I really enjoyed this series opener about flawed alien heroes not normally seen as the heroes. These warriors come with horns, tails, fangs they like to use to bite with, venom with unusual properties, and special alien equipment down below including knots...oh my!!"

"It's nice to read a black heroine whose whole personality isn't downtrodden or over the top sassy. She felt real because she was multidimensional and not a caricature."

"I loved the Pokémon and Charmander references in this book. The Outlander comparison is lovely as well. I loved how the main characters overcame their pasts together."

"Finally, a sci fi romance with a black lead and a purple alien with great chemistry."

NSFW Exclusive Excerpt (My Alien Captor)

A long, deep growl reverberated against my back, and he brought his hand up and away. I breathed a sigh of relief that he was awake, but then his hand came down hard on my sex. I gasped. He mashed his palm into my clit and grunted. Both hands left me and came down, one on my breast, the other on my sex, followed by a sensual mashing and massaging my skin.

I didn't know what to do, wake him or not? It didn't hurt. I kinda liked it. It was a little scary but also sexy as hell. He smacked both hands down again, and I gasped at the sting, still shocked.

Stretch Armstrong had turned our innocent cuddles into a kitty-slapping rodeo. Like a spanking, but with an extra rub in there. He was testing out my skin like a butcher might pound a side of beef. In fact, I'd seen him do it to the meat before he cooked it. He was tenderizing me before he ate me!

Writing Update!

I'm happy to announce the second draft of Book 3 is almost done! Skoll volunteered to go undercover inside the Dome at the end of Book 2. In Book 3, he shaves off his horns and is forced to act as Ajani's guard. He wants to help her escape early, but she has a fear of being touched. Spoiler: Eventually, he touches her. ;)

This book will be available for pre-order soon!

Here's a little teaser of Skoll's monster peen!

""Are you afraid of it, lass?" he ground out tightly, eyes wide, veins pulsing in his throat.

Um… No. I wasn't afraid. I was shocked, but I absolutely wanted to explore it. Skoll had this fascinating part of his body that I knew nothing about, and he was offering himself up to me. My mouth dropped open as I shook my head from side to side, still gasping for breath after that smoking hot kiss.

"Touch it, Sunshine. I won't hurt you." His deep voice rumbled across my cheek like a caress.

I wrapped my hand around it, pulling a long moan from deep in his chest. It felt strong and hard like a tree trunk as it oscillated in my grip. My hand seemed too small to give him any pleasure, so I added another hand and stroked downward to the wider part then back up to the tip. The suction cups kissed my skin as it passed over them."

I'm looking for beta readers! If you'd like to see behind the scenes and help with the process by sharing your reactions, email me at lyrastarkauthor@gmail.com. No experience necessary and it's a low-stress fun time!

Turn up the AC because this was spicy and hot as hell but also had a great story to go along with it. Our hero Vonne got his chance at redemption as he found how healing love and acceptance can be."

"Vonne was such a departure from the typical alien king or prince. He had depth which was refreshing. I was also happy that although Yazmin's life has been hard, she wasn't completely self-loathing. It's nice to read a black heroine whose whole personality isn't downtrodden or over the top sassy. She felt real because she was multidimensional and not a caricature."

His sleepy fingers started exploring absently. I stayed put and stopped singing. Sheer torture. I took the risk and jutted my hips up into his hand. Heaven. I did it again and again.

Oh God. I knew I should've told him to stop. I should've made sure he was awake, but I also had serious heat brewing between my legs. So I kept quiet.

I let my knees drop as he pounded his palms into my pussy and my tit and then massaged the sting away. He traced his fangs slowly over the skin of my neck but didn't bite. I wanted the bite, but I totally didn't want the bite right now either because oh my lord, that would end this fast.

Get a grip, girl. He told you he didn't want to touch you this way. Time to check in with him. "Shadow," I whispered and bit my lower lip with my teeth.

He grunted his acknowledgement, and I heard his tail hit the bed.

"Are you awake? Do you know what you're doing?"

"Aye," answered my horny pirate.

He smacked me again, harder this time, his breath quickening, his chest expanding against my back, the twists and turns of his massive cock sliding up between my cheeks. So powerful and firm.

Still, dangerous territory so I gave it another go. "Uh, Vonne, are you fully conscious, and are you sure you want to do this?"

His fingers flexed on my skin. "Yaaaz-minn. Mmm-hmm." Oh my freaking lord, his voice. So deep like it scraped on the bottom of an endless chasm before it came out of his mouth. "I am fully awake, and I want this," he firmly declared. Another smack came down, slightly different angle but still hitting his nipple-clit target.

"I want this." His husky breath scraped along my ear. He moved his attention to my other breast and mashed the nipple equally hard. His other hand landed on my hip and squeezed. Then I was turning to my stomach and being pulled up until my ass was in the air. A loud smack came down on the creases of my butt on both sides followed by the squeeze that dug his nails into my skin. "I want this. The way it bounces against my skin, the way it feels in my hands, the way it is all you, so uniquely Yazmin, only you, your skin reacts to me. Your flesh calls to me."

Okee. For an alien who struggled to find his words, he woke up with some filthy ones on his lips. He wasn't shaking or growling. It was risky, but I trusted him. The voice was doing it for me, and the rough smacking was hitting me just right. All I could say was, "Yes." Yes, I agree. I love the way my body reacts to you.

My Alien Thief is LIVE on Amazon

Lyra Stark Books

My Alien Thief is LIVE and FREE in Kindle Unlimited

Thank you to everyone who read and reviewed My Alien Thief. The launch was great and I'm so proud of Tor and Stella.
Readers are loving this book, and it has 4.54 stars on Goodreads. So proud.
Here's a review from Niki that I thought was especially awesome!

Aww man, Tor just pulled at my heartstrings.

Another unlikely hero, with a monster inside looking to break free, is caught off guard and unable to resist the lure of a mate bond. Tor is stubborn and used to being alone. An orphan and unwanted his whole life, he clings to the belief that he doesn't need anybody. But Stella, love starved after being a slave for 3 years, gets rescued by Tor on accident, may just be able to pierce Tor's hard exterior.

I really am enjoying this series. I love the flawed heroes and heroines. I'm also invested in the overarching storyline. I want to see the Zul brought to his knees. I can't wait for the next one and to find out what happened to the other human slaves that were with Stella.

Also as a final note if you didn't see my review of the first book...these aliens are very dirty, dirty guys. They like to bite and spank, and lord love them they are great dirty talkers. To top it off they have magical twisted unicorn horn cock with tentacle suckers and knots. So let's just say this has a heat level of combustion.

I ran to the vessel in a frenzied rage and smacked my palms against the window. "You said I could have as long as it takes. You said you'd wait," I screamed.

"Back away." His voice was muted through the thick glass, but I could still hear him.

"Nai," I yelled back in his language.

"Back away and let me go," he barked angrily.

"Not unless you tell me why. Why are you bailing on me without even telling me? Abandoning me in space?" I pounded on the glass and yelled at him. I was being irrational. Fine. Whatever. If I didn't fight for him, I'd never see him again, and my dad told me to fight, so I slammed the glass harder and screamed louder. "I don't even know where I am. Where the hell am I?"

His lips pulled back over his teeth, and he stomped out of the cockpit. He made it down the ramp and grabbed my wrists from the glass. Within seconds, he was hauling me off the vehicle like a rag doll. He glanced around and pulled me to a side room.

The room held nothing but several pairs of handcuffs attached to shiny black walls. It looked like some kind of detention facility.

He forced me against the wall and locked the cuff on my wrist next to my head. Then repeated with my other hand as I struggled against him. He bent down and I kicked him in the chest with the heel of my foot. It did nothing but bounce off. He gripped my ankles and strapped them into the restraints.

"Be quiet." He whirled around and stalked away, running his hands over his horns and tugging on the curved parts at the end of them.

"Nai. I will not lavmet. I risked my life for you, and this is what I get?"

When he walked back toward me, his shoulders were hunched, his neck bent forward, fists clenched, and his face pulled down in a grimace like he was walking against the wind in a fierce storm. "Once before I leave."

"What are you talking about?"

His eyes flared brilliant yellow, and his skin darkened to a deep tarnished bronze with golden highlights on his pecs and abs. God, he was a magnificent creature when he was angry, all bulging veins, muscles taut, ready to strike. I should've been scared, but I knew he'd never hurt me. At least we were talking now, and he wasn't in the shuttle about to depart into space without me forever.

He smashed his lips to mine and a jolt of electricity zipped through me. It caught me off-guard and I grunted, trying to pull away from it and keep my lips closed.

He'd never kissed me before, and he was going to take it from me while I was angry and tied up? He had some nerve assuming I wanted him to kiss me when he was being a total ass.

My Alien Thief is LIVE on Amazon

My Alien Thief is LIVE and FREE in Kindle Unlimited

No one can ever know the secrets an alien keeps under his kilt.

Years of captivity on a hostile alien planet have broken my spirit. I have no fight left, so when a big goat of a man crashes in and sets me free, I'm forced to beg the grunty alien with pointy fangs and a pierced tail to take me with him into the wild unknown. As I get to know my reluctant savior, I discover that Tornoc Roth likes to take things that don't belong to him, including my heart.

"This was the perfect story to follow book one. A well-rounded and rewarding read."

"Full of adventure, action, romance, and love. And the steamy scenes will blow your mind! Highly recommend!"

"Let's see what else is in this box. Shall we?"

He growled long and deep as he paced away from me.

I pulled out a thick strap of leather with metal rings. "I wonder what this is for." I draped it over my shoulders. "And this?" I pulled out a smooth purple tail with sparkly bits on it and a plug looking thing at the end. "Is this part of the costume?"

He stalked back to me, and his eyes were on fire, almost glowing orange. "You're not ready for this. You're a fragile human with baggage. Take them off."

"Not ready for what?" I adjusted the leather across my chest, feeling cheeky and brave in the face of an angry warrior. I didn't know where my confidence came from. Maybe it was the mind-boggling orgasms he'd given me last night. A girl could face down a sexy angry alien if it meant she'd get the goods again. "Just answer me. Is this some kind of kinky play dress up thing?"

"Keen-gee?" His lips struggled to form the word, missing the strong k in the middle, instead softening it to sound completely different.

"Like a little naughty. Something not everyone likes and some people think it's deviant, but really it's not any of those things. It's okay to like them, but you don't talk about it because it's kinda private, but you might share it with someone you trust who also thinks it's hot."

His brow creased deeply, and the corners of his lips turned up. "You ask complex questions of a simple male."

"Okay. Let me rephrase. Do you think I look sexy with these horns on?"

"Of course," he stated firmly. "You're driving me insane with all this talking while you're wearing them. It's maddening."

Ooh. Heat rose in my cheeks. I was driving him mad? That sounded kind of fun and a little dangerous. "Why did Nefer put them in the box?"

He threw his hands up and down again. His tail twitched. "I don't know. Maybe she saw your marks. She saw my horns. She's happy for you? It's a gift of some sort? I don't understand how females work at all. You really should ask her these questions."

"I actually think I get it. She's very nice, and she likes to help people. She probably thinks I'd enjoy it."

He took a step closer to me, and I reflexively backed up. "Would you?" His deep voice held a hint of tease that created a tingling need between my legs.

"Will I vibrate again?" I answered his question with another question.

"Aye." Hot lust coursed through me as his deep voice rumbled like an angry pirate, and my mouth watered. I'd never do something like this back on Earth, but that version of Stella was gone. The new me wanted to take risks. I'd suffered enough to know that life was too short and precious to hide in fear and doubt. Everything could be lost in an instant, and I'd regret not taking the leap when I had the chance. I hesitated, afraid to say what I really wanted. The raw hunger in his eyes was so molten and inviting, I felt reckless. Why not?

I handed him the leather belt and the tail. "Show me."
