The Centaxian turned and headed in Mal’s direction.

The man stopped nearby. “Come out.”

His voice was even, calm, not giving anything away. She watched him for a second and realized his eyes were back to normal, the eerie green glow was gone.

Mal ducked out of the wreck and stood. She saw the man’s gaze move to the laser cutter, then come back to her face.

She drew in a deep breath. “Thank you. Uh…I’m—”

“Malin Phoenix.”

Oh. “You know who I am.”

“Yes.”

“Thank you. For saving me.”

He gave a curt nod.

Chatty guy. “You ever speak more than two words?”

“Yes.”

Mal waited, but he didn’t say anything else. Right. “I was here—”

“You have a salvage license for Centax.”

She saw his eyes flicker, and realized he was accessing those records at that very moment. Amazing. “You have me at a disadvantage. I have no idea who you are.”

“Centax Security.”

A CenSec. A shiver snaked through her. She’d already guessed as much but had secretly hoped it wasn’t true.

No one wanted to run into the galaxy’s deadliest killers. “Do you have a name?”

A pause. “Yes.”

She waited, suppressed the frustration bubbling in her chest. “Are you going to tell me?”

“Xander Saros.”

Xander. Yep, it suited him. He looked like a Xander. “What the hell is going on?”

“A coup.”

“A coup?” Shock was a punch to her stomach. “Who the hell would try and take over Centax?” And take on this scary cyborg and the other CenSecs like him?

“No time for explanations. More like him—” a nod at the dead giant “—will be on their way.”

“Right.” She didn’t want to face anymore giants.

“Starfreighter.”

She blinked. “What?”

“Starfreighter. You have one.”

“Yes—”

“I need it.” He wrapped a hand around her bicep and started pulling her toward the landing pads.

“Now hang on! I plan on getting off-planet. Right now.”

“As do I.”

Hell Squad fans, Marc is the twin brother of Zeke and they’re the sons of Gabe Jackson (of Hell Squad fame) and Doc Emerson. Colbie is the daughter of Hawk pilot Finn and his wife, drone operator Lia. Just a reminder that you don’t need to have read Hell Squad in order to enjoy Hunter Squad. These are new standalone adventures.

I saw Colbie walk in. I blinked. She was wearing a small, green dress that hugged her slim form. It tied up with a bow behind her neck, which just itched to be pulled free. She looked…hot.

Then I spotted the man beside her. She was holding some douchebag’s hand.

My gaze narrowed. I didn’t know him, but he looked like a stiff wind would blow him over and wore a pair of heavy-framed glasses. His jeans had neat creases in them. I could almost see the word Geek glowing in bright letters above him.

“Marc?”

“Huh?” I blinked and realized that Mom was looking at me.

She studied me hard. “Are you all right?”

“Yes.” I cleared my throat, keeping an eye on Colbie and the guy. “What would you like to drink?”

“I’m okay. I see Greer has a bottle of wine open. I’ll get a glass from her.”

“I’ll check on the steaks. Dad always overcooks them.” But I didn’t head for the grill. Instead, I headed toward Colbie. She and her date were chatting with Sasha and Maxim.

“Evening, lark.”

She turned and rolled her eyes.

“You’re going to sprain something if you keep that up,” I warned her.

“Marc, this is Spencer. He’s a drone technician.”

“Hello.” Spencer pushed his glasses up the bridge of his nose and nodded. “Nice barbecue.”

I lifted my chin.

“Marc’s a member of Hunter Squad,” Colbie said.

I slapped the man on the back. “Welcome, Spence.”

Maybe my slap was a little hard. Spencer stumbled forward.

Colbie’s gaze narrowed on me. “Aren’t you needed at the grill?”

“Nope.”

She bristled. Every time she did that I felt a shot of anticipation. I waited to see what would come out of her mouth.

Instead, there was the ping of the communicator. Colbie gave me one hot glare, then pulled her comm unit out. Her face fell. “Crap.”

“What’s wrong?” I asked.

“I’m on standby tonight. A couple of the pilots are out with the flu.”

For all our technology and nano-meds, we still hadn’t managed to find a cure for the flu.

“I’m needed to make an emergency supply drop to a small community in the Blue Mountains.” She looked at Spencer. “I’m sorry, I have to go.”

Spencer nodded. “I’ll give you a ride.”

I stepped closer. “They need you to fly tonight?”

She nodded. “It’s a shipment of urgent medicines. Save me some prawns.”

She waved her goodbyes, and I watched her leave with her geek in tow.

“Who’s the guy?” I muttered.

“He works on the drones,” Sasha said. “He’s kinda cute. They’ve been out for coffee a couple of times.”

I grunted.

“Steaks are ready,” Zeke called out.

Soon, everyone was sitting at the long table I’d set up in the yard. There were heavily-loaded plates of meat and bowls of salad courtesy of my parents. Everyone was laughing and having a fun time.

This. This was why I picked up a carbine. To protect this. The small moments that mattered.

That’s when I heard a communicator ping. Then another. Mine vibrated in my pocket.

I groaned. “We’re supposed to be done for the night.”

“Monsters don’t take time off,” Jameson said.

Everyone on Hunter Squad pulled out their comm units, but Jameson was already reading his. He stood, and the grim look on his face made me tense.

“Hunter Squad, we need to go,” he said.

I rose. “What’s wrong?”

His gaze met mine. “Colbie’s Talon went down.”

My ears filled with static. “What?”

“She made a mayday call en route to the supply drop. Her Talon crashed and we’ve lost communication with her.”

“Oh, no,” my mom said. My dad wrapped an arm around her.

I couldn’t breathe. Colbie. Crashed. “Who was with her?”

“No one.” A muscle ticked in Jameson’s jaw. “She was alone. She crashed in the middle of the Blue Mountains.”

My chest burned. She’d crashed in an area infested with monsters.

I pushed back from the table. “Let’s go and bring her home.”

“We’ll clean up here,” Mom said. “Go.”

With a nod, I strode toward the house. Resolve filled me.

I was going to bring my lark home.

Over ten years ago, I wrote a story about treasure hunters in space. I had a blast packing the story with action, adventure, romance, and an Indiana-Jones-in-space vibe. I was then very pleased to sell that story to a publisher.

Fast forward to now, and several books in the series later, I finally got rights back to that first story! I am so very thrilled to be able to lightly edit and re-vamp the Phoenix Adventures stories with new covers, paperbacks, put them in Kindle Unlimited for the first time, and also put them into audio.

I am aiming to release one book a month (working around my other releases) and there will currently be ten books (and maybe some new Phoenix Adventures stories next year!)

The light she’d spotted was spilling from a half-open door. She pushed it open.

Living quarters. Not tidy ones. She noted the clothes strewn across the floor. A large bed with rumpled covers was pushed against one wall. A battered metal desk was closest to her.

What sat on it had the breath rushing out of her lungs.

She circled the desk. “By Suva’s grace.” A Renaissance bronze in mint condition. She’d only ever seen pictures of them in records. She reached out a trembling hand.

Then she was yanked backward.

A strong arm wrapped around her chest like a steel band. A hard male body pressed against her back. She stiffened and shoved her elbow into a firm abdomen. A wet, naked abdomen. The cool metal of a weapon pressed against her temple and she froze.

“I’ve had a bad day.” The male voice was low, raspy. “I’ve already had one woman sneak up on me today. I don’t plan to make it two.”

“I don’t care what kind of day you’re having.” She wasn’t violent by nature, but she’d been trained to defend herself on isolated digs. Acting on instinct, she dropped low and swiped out at his ankles with her foot.

She’d obviously surprised him, because he toppled. Pulling her over with him.

For a second, she glimpsed the lean, tough body of a runner—all firm, sinewy muscle. She had a quick impression of dark ink covering one of his arms. She didn’t let her gaze go lower.

She landed on top of him with an oof. He was strong, and she realized that she’d never beat him in a fair fight.

He was cursing in a language her lingual implant didn’t recognize. She scrambled off him, reaching for the laser pistol that was now lying on the floor.

Her fingers brushed metal. Then she was tackled from behind.

She hit the floor face-first and all the air was forced out of her lungs in rush. The man’s heavy weight settled over her, and her cheek pressed against the smooth concrete.

Warm breath tickled her ear. “Now what, darlin’?”

“Now nothing. Get off me.” Eos bucked her body. But all that did was grind her butt into a hard stomach.

“Not until you tell me who you are and what the hell you’re doing in my place.”

She sucked in a breath. “No one met my shuttle.”

Footsteps.

“Her name’s Dr. Eos Rai.”

She recognized Niklas’ voice. Relief flooded through her. She turned her head enough to see Niklas and a younger man with tawny hair in the doorway.

The younger man smiled. “Twice in one day you’ve gotten beaten up by a girl, Dath.”

“Screw you, Z,” the man above her said.

She guessed the one with Niklas was the former Galactic Strike Wing fighter pilot, Zayn. Which left the hard, dangerous man on top of her as none other than Dathan Phoenix.

There was a blur of movement to my right. Suddenly, a small figure launched through the air and crashed into Bastian.

Georgie gasped and I yanked her backward, out of the line of fire.

There were shocked cries as people nearby scrambled out of the way.

Bastian didn’t go down. He caught his attacker, but the added weight made him stagger.

That’s when I realized his attacker was female. Hell, it was the female dealer with the red hair I’d seen earlier.

She moved like a damn acrobat, slipping up and wrapping her thighs around Bastian’s neck.

As she twisted, this time he fell, trying to pull her off him.

They crashed to the carpet.

“F*ck,” I muttered.

“Aren’t you going to help him?” Georgie gasped, wide-eyed.

“No, he’s got it.”

Bastian yanked on the woman’s red hair and the wig fell off. She was short, petite, with a fit body. Her dark hair reached her shoulders and complemented large, brown eyes.

“Lark, I—” Bastian started.

She flipped and pinned him to the floor. “Shut up. I’m just here to kill you.”

Georgie sucked in a sharp breath.

I watched the tiny assassin pull a knife from under her vest. Bastian reared up and knocked it away.

She leaped off and launched a kick at him. He jerked to the side, and her booted foot narrowly missed his head.

I knew she was well-trained. There’d be enough power in that kick to incapacitate.

Bastian rose, his gaze locked on her. “Lark,” he growled.

“You killed him, now I’ll kill you.” She drew another knife.

The way she held it showed she knew exactly how to use it.

She threw it.

Bastian moved like water—fast, liquid. The knife embedded in the blackjack table beside him.

He rushed her, but she leaped onto another table, scattering chips everywhere. People screamed. Another knife appeared in her hand.

Several security guards, including Theo, were closing in fast.

Lark clocked them and her face twisted, then she tossed the knife and leaped off the table.

Dammit. She landed in a crowd of people and disappeared. I scanned around, but there was no sign of her.

“Hell,” Bastian muttered.

“Oh no,” Georgie cried.

He had a knife embedded in his right shoulder. He gripped the hilt and pulled it out.

“Are you okay?” Georgie hurried over to him.

Impatiently, Bastian yanked his tie off, wadded it into a ball, and pressed it to the bleeding wound. “I’ll live.”

I cleared my throat. “If she wanted to really kill you, you’d be dead.”

“I know.” A dark look settled on his face, his gaze on the spot where she’d disappeared.

“Who is she?”

“Lark,” I said. “The woman who’s always trying to kill him.”

Whatever your plans, I hope you enjoy the holidays and are excited for the start of a new year. I just sent my latest book off to my editor (yay) and am officially on vacation for a few weeks.

Thanks so much for reading this year. Every message and email I receive from my readers keeps me so inspired! I am incredibly excited for 2026 and for all the stories I have brewing in my head.

Who wants to go on vacation with Vander Norcross?

I had a wonderful few weeks of vacation in Italy with my family this year. While I was admiring the view on the Amalfi Coast, I had an idea for a Norcross story leap into my head. I pictured Vander and Brynn heading off to Italy for a relaxing vacation…that doesn’t quite go to plan.

I plotted the novella on my vacation (which was far less action-packed than Vander’s!) and when I got home, I just had to write it

“You need to let me go.”

Cray laughed. “I have you right where I want you, sweetheart.”

“But if Baker finds out, he’ll be pissed,” the other man stuttered.

Cray whirled and glared at the man. “He won’t find out, will he, Ronny?”

Ronny wiped his hand across his mouth. “N-no.”

“It’s not Baker you need to worry about.” Brynn tested her bindings again. “It’s my husband.”

An unhappy look crossed Cray’s face. “I didn’t know you were married.”

Brynn’s pulse picked up. “Once he knows someone’s taken me, he’ll come.” She met Cray’s brown gaze. “And he’ll annihilate you. All of you.”

Cray was silent a moment, then he let out a low, grating laugh. “He’ll have to find you first.” He jerked his head at Ronny. “Come on. We need to prep for tonight.” Then the two of them walked off, their steps echoing into the darkness.

Brynn started work trying to loosen the ropes.

She knew that finding her wouldn’t take her husband long.

Then he’d come for her. Like a dark, avenging angel.

Or like the loving husband he was…who also happened to be a deadly former Ghost Ops commander.

The most dangerous man in San Francisco.

She had to get free, and save Cray and Ronny’s worthless lives, before Vander arrived.

I held my card to the reader and walked into the staff area.

And spotted Caden and Allie having what looked like an intense discussion at the end of the hall.

Caden was busy doing his massive overhaul of the hotel’s security. If he had his way, there’d be cameras in every room of the hotel.

He grabbed Allie’s arm, and she snapped something at him. I raised my brows. He yanked her closer.

My breath hitched. It looked like he wanted to strangle her…or kiss her.

Allie pulled back, said something else, then stalked off with a flounce.

What the —? Allie Ford never flounced.

She still called him Broody, and thought he was paranoid, intense, and over-protective.

Caden strode down the hall, his face hard, something working behind his eyes. He spotted me and his stride hitched, then his face smoothed out.

“Everything okay?” I asked.

“Yes.”

“You sure?”

“Yes.”

I waited, but unsurprisingly got nothing else from him. Caden was definitely a man of few words. Fine. I’d interrogate Allie over margaritas.

“Well, don’t look now, but Bell, you’re about to meet your third billionaire,” Kavner said. “Dante, Beauden, you remember Ambrose Langston?”

My gaze switched to the man approaching. Wowser. He was handsome, in a young-Greek-god kind of way. He looked like he’d been born wearing his expensive suit, that showed off his lean body. “Ro, this is Mila and Bell,” Kav introduced us.

Ro Langston inclined his head, then turned to the Roths. “Roth, Monroe.”

“Langston,” Zane said, while Monroe leaned in to kiss Ro’s cheek.

“Ro is a hotel kingpin,” London said. “He and Kav are doing some joint projects together.”

A small smile tipped up the corner of Ro’s lips. “I own Langston Hotels.”

My eyes widened. I’d heard of the luxury chain of hotels and resorts. They had properties all around the world.

“Ro and Kav are planning a big new hotel here in New Orleans. That’s why he’s in town.” The corner of London’s lips quirked. “And why Kav invited him to come and spend lots of money tonight.”

“It’s for an excellent charity,” Mila said.

Ro nodded. “Then I’ll spend big.”

“And I want the rest of his money for our new business venture,” Kav said. “That’s why I’m working with him.”

“And I want yours,” Ro countered.

The men clinked their glasses together and smiled.

“I need to get ready for the fight.” Beau ran a hand down my back. “Mila promised me that she’s saved you a good seat.”

I shivered, excited to watch him.

“Dante and Mila will take care of you.” He dropped a quick kiss to my lips. “See you soon.”

“Good luck.”

It was time for the fight. I followed the Fury brothers and their ladies as we headed for the main part of the distillery.

“May I?” Ambrose Langston offered me his arm.

I assessed him, and decided he was just being polite. Besides, it seemed I liked my men a little more rugged.

I slid my arm through his. “Where are you from, Mr. Langston?”

“Ro, please. Colorado is going to be home for now. I move wherever my work takes me. I just purchased a mountain resort in the Rocky Mountains that I’m planning to overhaul. So, I’m making my base in Denver for now.”

“I guess you’re planning to transform this resort into the jewel in the Langston crown.”

He flashed me a smile that I was certain made many a woman fall at his feet. “Something like that.”

“I hope you’re as good as they say,” I said.

Her chin lifted. “I am.”

“This squad, those men…they’re like brothers to me.”

“It doesn’t matter who’s on my squad, I’ll always have their back.”

I stared into her dark eyes for a beat. “I guess I’ll need to see it to believe it.”

She gave me one last look, then strode ahead of me, walking confidently, her ponytail swaying.

I shook my head. My gut said that Jessica Ramos would last about as long as our last few recruits.

Before I knew it, she’d be gone.

Blowing out a breath, I fought back my reaction to her. I needed to get my mind off our latest recruit, and onto the monster we had to kill.
