Second read: A lot less happened in this book than I remembered from my first read, but I still enjoyed it a lot. Along with the weird science fiction and creepy horror material, it's quite funny! First read: This is a weird book, but I liked it! Once ...more |

| Pretty good. But on this re-read it didn't engage me much. The main thing it is saying is "Hey, a space elevator could work" but it takes a loooong time to get there, and mixes it with other less engaging stuff. I'm going to downgrade my rating from ...more | |

| A great example of engineering competency porn, well before classic examples like Apollo 13 and more recently The Martian. It's a lot of fun, even piecing together 1950's references and dated technology ideas. Meanwhile, it's Heinlein, so by the end ...more | |

This is a very good book! It is so crammed full of ideas and themes, and not in box-ticking way, but in a "the world and the people in it is all very complex" kind of way. I'd recommend Luminous if you like a story with a plot that is simple but a st ...more |

| Second read to check if it deserves to be on the SFBRP Must-Read list. I'm going to take it off, not because it's not a good book, but because it feels like 99% a fantasy book, not science fiction, and the Must-Read list is specifically for science f ...more | |

Given all your dilligent reviews over the years, including of Reynolds' novels, I'll share this video with you: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8bd7H... Reynolds, Vernor Vinge, Karl Schroeder and Charlie Stross at a public panel.

Yes, but only when I forget all the stuff I didn't like about the last few books.

I just found a list of Naval Science Fiction http://www.goodreads.com/list/show/31...
I guess it really is a thing. Not that I'd put Ender's Game in there, as that novel at least attempts to come up with a new analogy for space battles rather than doing everything possible to construct a world onto which the tactics and command of 19th century naval battles can be mapped exactly.
Hello Luke. Podcast-listener here. I really enjoy SFBRP. Your passionate British accent and your love for sci-fi shines though. You have inspired me to read more science fiction because till recently I was only into fantasy. Thank you for becoming goodreads friend.
Hey Luke! See you're reading The Hobbit. So sorry. Read that for a Sci-fi/Fantasy lit class in college and could barely finish it.Have you given Metro 2033 a look? It's a russian post-apocalyptic science fiction number. Real bleak. You'd love it.
Keep up the good work!
Hello Luke! Thanks for wanting to become my friend. :)
Please take a moment to check out my debut novel, Her Sanctuary which is doing quite well and is available at many bookstore websites including amazon.com where you can "look inside" for a sneak preview.
Please feel free to peruse my profile and see what I'm currently working on.
I look forward to exchanging book recs with you and chatting about, oh, I don't know, whatever comes to mind. :)
Thanks again!
Hey Luke, I'm a long time listener (or at least I've listened to all the SFBRP pod-casts) and finally have gotten around to 'friending' you. Thanks so much for your reviews. They're always thoughtful, passionate and entertaining. Completely agree with your review of Sawyer, except for the last part. I have to live in the same country as the guy, that should be punishment enough -- don't make me read him!
Starshipsofa twittered a 45 min interview with Alastair Reynolds. Guess what, he likes Book of the New Sun, but Schismatic is a favorite (around 19 min in). http://bit.ly/9DoPeq
