Author's Choice - Weird Children's Fiction
Lately, I have found titles of children's books, some of which I discovered years ago and read them again and I wanted to share them with my followers. All these titles are available to read on Internet Archive as e-books and there are limited copies in circulation. I chose these books because each story has weird fantasy elements or they have twisted plots that differ from other types of stories. Here are my selections:
The Adventures of a Two-Minute Werewolf
Fourteen-year-old Walt, discovering in himself a tendency to turn into a werewolf for two minutes, puts his talent to constructive use in thwarting the activities of a gang of burglars.
A different experience of the teen wolf genre, a lighthearted slice of life piece that avoids the typical pathos, extensive world building and/or love triangles that are commonly found in most modern works of werewolf fiction (I'm looking at you, Twilight!). This story was adapted for TV but there have been no plans to create more films. If anyone did make another movie of this story, I expect extensive changes to the source material.
The Strange Thing That Happened to Allen Brewster
Despite the disapproval of his parents and his formidable science teacher, nine-year-old Allen determines to do his science project on human photosynthesis.
A kid friendly mad science story that celebrates innovation in the face of skepticism. Sometimes adults don't take kids seriously. Allen does have support from his grandpa though. There is a surprisingly philosophical discussion about scientific ethics that is not commonly found in children's science fiction literature.
Trucilla's Wedding Cake
Trucilla Applegate is universally regarded as an entirely horrible lady. However, after the unexpected (and slightly suspicious) death of both the Applegate parents, Trucilla decides to take over the family home and evict her three siblings (Adriana, Calista ... and Bob) to the garden shed. Not content with this, she then decides to steal Adriana's wealthy boyfriend, Vincent. This time she may finally have pushed her siblings too far ... how, exactly are they planning to wreak their revenge?
A crafty and humorous story of sibling rivalry that will leave readers laughing out loud, reminiscent of the Dahl books. Heroic characters in children's books are usually expected to maintain the moral high ground when they face their enemies. But these three heroes are not afraid to get their hands dirty when dealing with their horrible sister. Readers will also enjoy the audiobook.
To my knowledge, these stories never gained widespread recognition with audiences. No sequels or remakes. Maybe that will change in the future because these stories do not follow the typical plots found in many works that have had countless adaptions. Also, these titles are unique and plant a question in the reader's mind so that they need to stop and read the book to find the answers! I know from personal experience.

Fairy Tale Critiques - Missing Pieces
A note from the author:
In anticipation of my second book More Tales of Virtuous Stepmothers, I will share some critical insights on the portrayal of stepmothers in traditional folklore and the reality of modern stepmothers. When authors repeat the same patterns of traditional storytelling, they are missing opportunities to explore different narratives that speak to modern readers and reflect the complex realities of blended families.
Mothers and Stepmothers
In traditional fairy tales like Cinderella and Snow White, the biological mother is deceased before the stepmother takes over the family. In many cases, the father usually remarried after the first wife died in childbirth. In this modern era, the mortality rate for mothers has dropped and there are more blended families with children that divide time between two homes. The traditional fairy tales do not show how the stepmother and biological mother co-exist within the same family. The saintly deceased mother is often compared to the villainous stepmother. That is a blind spot I strive to correct in future stories. It is true that there is often conflict between these two women about the distribution of family responsibilities and it's hard to imagine how they can get along. I have heard in some cases the bio mom and the stepmom do manage to achieve a functional if not amicable relationship. Some even become friends. As a writer, I need to overcome my personal bias to explore this connection when there has never been a historic example of two women successfully co-parenting in their blended families.
The Empowered Woman
Two Family Homes
Most stories with blended families in history show all members living together under one roof. In the present family law has changed so that parents can adopt a co-parenting routine from separate homes and the children divide their time between each parent. The traditional stories do not show how the child adjusts to this routine or balances two lives, not only in different spaces but also the emotional changes that occur in these situations. Children often struggle to express their feelings about living in a blended home. From personal experience, I felt annoyed because I thought I was the only one living in a divided household and my peers were still happy with their parents together under one roof. What made a big difference for me was learning that other kids had different custody arrangements, and I gradually found the words to describe my situation.
Amicable vs. Dysfunctional Bonds
Unity vs. Separation
Fathers
Stay tuned for more details.

Halloween Film Favorites - Best Fictional Witches and Covens
In anticipation of Halloween, I’ve decided to share my favorite witches and covens in film. If you are thinking about TV shows like Charmed, Bewitched or Sabrina the Teenage Witch, I’m not going to list every episode and I will not include sequels. This selection features the most dynamic witches, and witch groups. Most people agree that the first movie is usually the best. If you have your own favorite witches in movies, please share in the comments below.
The Witches of Eastwick - (1987)
The Witches - (1990)
Hocus-Pocus - (1993)
The Craft - (1996)
Practical Magic - (1998)
The Blair Witch Project - (1999)
The VVitch - (2015)
Wicked - (2024-2025)
Most of these films feature teams of witches working together to achieve their goals. Other stories focus on solitary witches. Many of these stories feature dark plots.

Freakier Friday - Perspectives and Reviews
After many weeks of anticipation, I finally had a chance to see the new Freakier Friday movie; the sequel to Freaky Friday with Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsey Lohan reprising their roles from as Tess and Anna Coleman. So many changes have occurred since we first saw this mother and daughter swap places in Freaky Friday. This time the fun is quadrupled when Anna's daughter Harper (Julia Butters) and future stepdaughter Lily (Sophia Hammons) also get swapped with them just before Anna's upcoming wedding to Lily's father Eric (Manny Jacinto). I found some articles and critical opinions from others that have seen the movie. Now I know that these two "freaky" movies offer a timely and sympathetic portrayal of blended families and single parents that resonate with modern viewers. Minor spoiler warnings lie ahead. I will share my own thoughts about this movie later.
These words from one of Curtis's interviews perfectly summarize the value of these two films and how other viewers can see their own experiences reflected in the lives of the Coleman family.
Jamie Lee Curtis interview with journalist Mawunyo Gbogbo of ABC in Sydney
Question
Blended families are a big part of Freakier Friday, so how much does this organically generate drama?
Answer
Blended families come from some loss, sometimes conflict. Conflict is sort of at the core of every family blended or not and in Freaky Friday and Freakier Friday you deal with loss, conflict and resolution and if there's ever a time in the world, we need to say walk a mile in my shoes, I'll walk a mile in your shoes and maybe you'll understand me better. If ever we needed that it's today.

Don't Forget Stepfamily Day! (September 16, 2025)
My family created our own Stepmother's Day before learning years later that Stepfamily Day is an official calendar holiday! Read more about the history here:
National Stepfamily Day is celebrated on September 16 every year. Families come in all shapes and sizes — small, big, biological, adoptive, and even step, and they all deserve to be celebrated. Unlike most types of families, members of a blended family choose to come together. Whether it’s because of divorce, estrangement, death, or another reason, stepfamilies need to unite and rebuild their lives together, and that deserves recognition.
In 1997, Christy Borgeld proposes a day to recognize and celebrate stepfamilies, founding National Stepfamily Day.
