When I was about three or four years old, I watched "Space:1999" for the first time, and some months later I started watching "Star Trek" (the original series; this was many years before my all-time favorite TNG started). From the first moment on, I knew that I wanted to defy the Final Frontier of space. Right from the start I knew that you need computers to do that, so I decided that computers (and robots) are cool.

After some detours, I made IT my profession in 1996, working both as a trainer and as a developer for the web that was still young back then. Since 1997, I've been working as an employed Senior Software Engineer at a web company in my hometown Cologne.

Since 2002, I've been writing IT textbooks like the "IT-Handbuch für Fachinformatiker" (it was published in its fifth updated and extended edition in August 2011), "Apache 2.4" (four editions until now), as well as books about Flash, MySQL, Ruby, and other admin and programming topics.

In September 2016, I self-published the German version of my first novel, "Göttersommer", after writing fiction for years but never finishing any because of time constraints. Then I created the English version, "Summer of the Gods", which was finished on December 31, 2016, then professionally edited by a native-speaking freelance editor, and self-published a few days ago.

My hobbies -- apart from computers -- are books (novels, especially science fiction and fantasy, but also many topics of non-fiction), comics (I've been reading them since I was about 7 or 8, and I actively write and draw my own), and music (Heavy Metal and Hard Rock).

Seit ich im Alter von etwa drei oder vier Jahren zum ersten Mal "Mondbasis Alpha 1" (Originaltitel "Space:1999") und kurz darauf "Star Trek" im Fernsehen sah, war mir klar, dass ich einst in die unendlichen Weiten des Alls aufbrechen wollte. Von Anfang an wusste ich, dass man dafür Computer benötigt, also beschloss ich, dass Computer (und Roboter) cool sind.

1996 orientierte ich mich nach einigen Umwegen auch beruflich in Richtung IT, zunächst als freiberuflicher IT-Trainer und Entwickler für das damals noch junge Web, dann einige Jahre lang als fest angestellter Trainer. Seit 2007 arbeite ich als Senior Developer bei einer Kölner Webagentur.

Seit 2002 habe ich eine Reihe von Fachbüchern geschrieben, darunter das "IT-Handbuch für Fachinformatiker" (aktuell: 5. erweiterte und aktualisierte Auflage, August 2011), "Apache 2.4" (4. Auflage Dezember 2011; beide bei Galileo Press) und Bücher zu Flash, MySQL und Ruby (O'Reilly Verlag). Daneben habe ich auch diverse Fachbücher übersetzt und Artikel in Fachzeitschriften veröffentlicht.

Im September 2016 erschien mein erster Roman "Göttersommer" im Self-Publishing, nachdem ich jahrelang Fiktion geschrieben, aber aus Zeitgründen nie fertig geschrieben habe. Anschließend habe ich ihn selbst ins Englische übersetzt, am 31.12.2016 fertiggestellt und -- nach einer professionellen Korrektur durch eine freiberufliche Korrektorin und Muttersprachlerin -- vor einigen Tagen unter dem Titel "Summer of the Gods" veröffentlicht.

Privat beschäftige ich mich -- neben Computern -- am liebsten mit Büchern (sowohl Romanen, vor allem Science Fiction, als auch Sach- und Fachbüchern), mit Comics (aktiv und passiv) sowie mit Musik der etwas härteren Gangart (Hardrock bis Heavy Metal). ...more
