Jorge A. Aguirre is an East Coast-based writer born and raised in Columbus, Ohio. He wrote the graphic novel, GIANTS BEWARE (First Second Books/Macmillan), which the New York Times called, a "rollicking fun story." He also wrote its sequel, DRAGONS BEWARE (May 2015). I am a librarian in a mostly Latinx community, and I am so excited for Call Me Iggy! I really enjoyed the Chronicles of Claudette, but I was curious--why did you chose to write about ostensibly white French people when there are so very few latinx/hispanic kids comics and graphic novels available?

A little background for your question...

Rafael was born and raised in Puerto Rico (moved to Ohio as a teen) but he has always loved the look of French comics. For a year or so he kept drawing these three street urchins in the French visual style he liked. He couldn’t get the image out of his mind. He shared them with me and we developed the characters and world into Claudette. So the birth of the idea came from an image Raf had. The voice of Claudette, however, was inspired by the Argentine cartoonist, Quino's character Mafalda. I read a bunch of Mafalda before writing the first book and I re-read Mafalda before writing each book.

Raf and I both feel like our Latinidad finds its way into our French inspired world. As Latinos from the Midwest we’ve often felt like the Other and that makes its way into Claudette books. Our approach is to take archetypes/ cliches (Warrior, Princess, French Baker - ok maybe that last one isn’t an archetype but it should be!) and try to turn them around some - look at them from a different angle or POV. That too comes from our identities.

So our Claudette books are not about Latino characters but we think they’re infused with our Latinidad. That said, I can't wait to get Call Me Iggy out into the world. It does have a lot of Latino characters in it and it is very close to my heart.

We always knew we wanted to tell the story of Augustine's fateful battle with Azra the Dragon. This story is sort of how Claudette finishes the battle her father began with a dragon many years ago.(less)
