Sheila Nielson was terrified of the dark as a child. Her very overactive imagination made the monsters she imagined hiding under her bed seem all too real. Then one day her mother suggested that she use her imagination to think up stories rather than monsters every night. There was no turning back after that. Now Ms. Nielson creates stories to scare her readers rather than herself! She already has two stories published—Forbidden Sea and it's sequel, Shadow in the Sea. She graduated from college with a BFA in illustration and has worked as a children's librarian for over twenty-four years. ...more

Some had elements of real people here and there--others just came to life as the story and their part in it progressed. Getting to know a character in a story is a lot like getting to know a new friend. The more you hang around with them, the better you get to know their personality and how they would react in each situation. For Forbidden Sea I also drew sketches of the main characters which helped me to visualize and understand them better. I also created a music soundtrack with songs that represented each character. When I'd write a scene with that character, I would play their song. (less)

The Ghost of Wyvern Lake by Sheila A. Nielson
"This was my first Kindle read, so I really missed the tactile experience of handling the book and admiring it's design, but I love Sheila Nielson's books so I read it on a screen anyway. It did not disappoint. As always, Sheila created memorable char" Read more of this review »
The Ghost of Wyvern Lake by Sheila A. Nielson
"Not usually into spooky stories, but trusting the author, I gave it a go. A quick read, The Ghost of Wyvern Lake had a fun sense of mystery with its ghost story. It also had some mystical elements, which I loved. It left me wanting a sequel to learn " Read more of this review »
Lifelike by Sheila A. Nielson
"I really like to read about haunted houses and scary stuff that happens. I believe in spirits living in another realm different from our mortal world. I was excited to read this book, that came highly recommended to me. It was a fun, not too scary, o" Read more of this review »

Jacqueline Kelly
“One day I would have all the books in the world, shelves and shelves of them. I would live my life in a tower of books. I would read all day long and eat peaches. And if any young knights in armor dared to come calling on their white chargers and plead with me to let down my hair, I would pelt them with peach pits until they went home.”
Jacqueline Kelly, The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate

“Friendship ... is born at the moment when one man says to another "What! You too? I thought that no one but myself . . .”
C.S. Lewis, The Four Loves

Douglas Adams
“The fact that we live at the bottom of a deep gravity well, on the surface of a gas covered planet going around a nuclear fireball 90 million miles away and think this to be normal is obviously some indication of how skewed our perspective tends to be.”
Douglas Adams, The Salmon of Doubt: Hitchhiking the Galaxy One Last Time

Terry Pratchett
“Some humans would do anything to see if it was possible to do it. If you put a large switch in some cave somewhere, with a sign on it saying 'End-of-the-World Switch. PLEASE DO NOT TOUCH', the paint wouldn't even have time to dry.”
Terry Pratchett, Thief of Time

“I think there should be a rule that everyone in the world should get a standing ovation at least once in their lives.”
