Tropetastic and Thoughtful High-Concept Romance: Mhairi McFarlane's IF I NEVER MET YOU

The high-concept/tropetastic hook: After her boyfriend-since-college unceremoniously dumps her, thirty-six year old biracial (or "dual heritage") Nice Girl Laurie Watkinson tries to make him jealous by dating the playboy at the Manchester (England) law firm where all three work.

The far more nuanced details:

I'm not usually all that drawn by high-concept romances, but I found If I Never Met You  Read more of this blog post »

“The demons of the Devil don't use your weak weaknesses against you, they use your strong ones. If you're rational and logical, they argue their case rationally and logically. If you're loyal and faithful, they turn those against you. If you're passionate and emotional, they make you passionate and emotional about your worse fears. Your weak weaknesses are no use to them.... They find the strongest weaknesses you didn't know were yours and use those against you.”

“Yet, isn't it strange, isn't it weird, how we can KNOW that someone is not behaving in the way we imagine, and at the same time we can be totally convinced that he is! How clever the human mind is, that it can accept two contradictory things as 'facts.' Yes, I know that in this case one 'fact' was untrue. But the human mind can KNOW something is untrue and still accept it as a 'fact,' and act on it as if it were true.”

Thanks for the rec, Jen! I'll definitely check it out.

Jennifer Hallock Jackie, I recommend you check out Better At Weddings Than You for your blog. The heroine is totally competent, works hard at what she does, and she is the best at it. Best of all, she does not pretend to be less than any of these things, and the hero wants to be her understudy! Also, all Filipino characters set in Manila.

Talltree Thanks for the FR, I'm honored!! Truly respect and love the thoughts on your blog<3!!!

willaful You respect my taste in books? You can't have been paying attention... ;-)

Jackie How funny! I put in my votes -- did you?

Stephanie Hi Jackie! I just met Maria Modugno yesterday (she is--get ready--one of my old student's mom's sister-in-law's sister) and she told me you both worked together at Little Brown, back when they were in Boston. I thought that was a funny coincidence :)
