| I'm not sure this was the right book to read in the middle of the hottest summer on record on all continents on the planet, with raging fires, drought, drying rivers exposing Nazi warships alongside ancient mammoth bones, and record-breaking heatwave ...more | |

I read this because I enjoy Yann Martel's books and I've just re-read The Odyssey (Trans. Emily Wilson). So a book tangentially about The Iliad and an ordinary soldier, a nobody, in the Greek struggle against the Trojans? Sure, why not. Son of Nobody ...more |

| I read George Eliot's/Marian Evans' masterpiece for the first time at the beginning of COVID in 2020. I'm so glad I revisited it this year (2026); it's even richer on second reading and I imagine on successive readings for as long as one would like! ...more | |

“I have spent a good many years since―too many, I think―being ashamed about what I write. I think I was forty before I realized that almost every writer of fiction or poetry who has ever published a line has been accused by someone of wasting his or her God-given talent. If you write (or paint or dance or sculpt or sing, I suppose), someone will try to make you feel lousy about it, that's all.”

Hi Philippa,Hope all is well in your world. I haven't fallen off the face of the earth; just left the social network. (It's been a year and a half already.) It wasn't a a healthy fit for me. New book coming out next spring. In the meantime, I'm honing my painting skills. Who knows? Perhaps I can become an illustrator.
