I enjoy reading about and getting inspired by the way writers and artists engage their creative process, and that always helps me get back to sitting down and getting some writing done. One consistent way I've found to help me get back into a writing project, whether it's a chapter, or an opening, or an ending, or even a longer work that I am not quite sure exactly where it's going, is to take the idea or concept or plotline I am trying to convey and distill it into a short poem. This clears my head and lets me focus on a creative way to approach the work at hand. The lines from the poem springboard me into ways to start a chapter or develop descriptions and dialogue. Even if the draft doesn't quite go anywhere, I get a poem out of the writing session, and that creates a helpful, energizing momentum in and of itself. My recently published novella "Anya Chases Down the End" was greatly helped by this strategy, and the poems ended up becoming an integral part of the story.(less)
