It’s Just Wrong

I’ve been holding on to this rant for a couple of weeks. I waver back and forth between sharing and not. But I’m so fed up with this that I need to get this off my chest. Actually it’s more like out of my head.

I need to say a couple of things first – There are a bunch of teachers in my life and I’m fond of them all. I don’t blame them for the current educational paradigm. My kid’s teachers are great. My Cousin Amy is fabulous. This is not a criticism of teachers or teaching. It’s not.

Also, I’ve been working at the local school for eight years full time. I subbed before that. On November of last year I was informed my job would not be funded for the following school year. And while this has happened to me before and I have always been offered another position, it was a new position that I really liked. It hit me hard and made it very difficult for me to perform to my full potential for the rest of the year. And I wasn’t offered another position. I’m currently jobless. (Not that having more time to write is bad, but it is hard on the finances.)

I’m pretty burned out on school at the moment.

Keep those things mind as I rant. I may not be entirely clear headed.

My life is ruled by my children’s education. I can’t plan anything because the amount of homework they bring home keeps them busy every evening and weekends are generally full up too. Labor day weekend? Can’t go anywhere because the boys have a paper to write.  The Thanksgiving break will have a paper assigned to it, sometimes two. The special events we attended as a family before Christmas – caroling, decorating, wrapping, baking, musicals, ballets – all gone. Mid-term exams are scheduled for the week before Christmas break now, so it’s all cramming for exams and test taking. This is supposed to be so the students won’t spend the entire break studying. Except someone didn’t get the memo. Last year a novel had to be finished and a five page paper written during the holiday break. So much for having the time between Christmas and New Year for the family. (And there’s a two week period in the beginning of January when almost no real work happens because the mid-terms were finished two weeks before the term ends. Go figure.)

The same happens over winter and spring break. I hate it, but I’ve come to accept it. But then we come to summer. Eight weeks of pure unfettered childhood. The time of family vacations and reunions and campouts and general goofing off and relaxation. UNLESS your high-schooler enrolls in honors or advanced placement classes. Then it’s two classics to be read and annotated and a paper written.

I don’t know about you, but when I was a kid there wasn’t any summer homework. We ran around in packs. Biked the trails along the river, hung out at the lake, swam at the pools, public and private. We camped with our families. Traveled to the Grand Canyon.

My poor kids spent a lot of their summer with their noses in a book, a pen in their hands, their fingers on the keyboard. And it feels like punishment to me.  No days spent with my sons sitting by the lake. No plans for campfires or hikes along  the beach. My memories of the summer – I got to go to PEI, afterall – are not my son’s memories. High school has claimed their summer, along with every other spare moment in their life.

I don’t like it. There isn’t any balance. It’s all homework, homework, and more fucking homework. And what I want for my kids doesn’t seem to matter any more.

Why I Want to be John Barrowman

[image error]The short answer is because then I wouldn’t be an anonymous middle aged woman who needs, but doesn’t want, a job.

Here’s an irony for you. I wrote the above sentence and then gave my oldest daughter a big talk about how it’s who you are not how much money you have that’s important. She’s going to spend the weekend with young people who are far more affluent than we are and I don’t want her self esteem to suffer. She rolled her eyes and said “It’s Binky, Mom.”

His name is not really Binky, but you get the idea. And her self esteem does seem pretty unsquashable. (I also gave her the drugs lecture, in case you are wondering.)

So why would I rather be John Barrowman than myself?

Because he looks like he’s having a good time. He’s convincing in both a Scottish and American accent. He’s young and probably has enough money. Well younger than me and more money than me. It’s all relative, isn’t it? I’m sure there are people who think I’ve got it pretty easy – and they’d be right.

I have no idea if John really is having as much fun as he seems to be. Maybe he’s privately miserable. A closet whinger.

(Unlike me. I’m a public whinger/whiner/whatever.)

But I’d like to find out. Could we have a John Barrowman for a day contest? I’d love to be John Barrowman for a day. Or even hang with John Barrowman for a day. That might be even better…

This is where I’d like to post two photoshopped pictures -> one of my head on John Barrowman’s body, and one of me and John Barrowman hanging. Hanging out. Out. Not hanging. But I’m afraid if I post un-approved photoshopped pictures of John Barrowman I’d be a bad example for my children. Rats. Foiled by motherhood again.

Title Wars: Stayin’ Alive vs Stayin’ Dead and then some other ramblings.

Warning. This post devolves pretty quickly into ramblings and memories. You might want to skip this one.

Did you ever have one of those days that culminated in you wanting to scream the F word from about fifty different places in your home? I did. But I went to visit one of my very good friends before I totally lost it and I’m feeling much better now. But really, could we please not have any more days like that? Thank you.

When I put up my Kickstarter Project (No this is not what made me want to scream obscenities. That had to do with my lovely children, cooking, heat and broken things. It shall not be spoken of again.)

When I went to launch  my latest not likely to fund Kickstarter Project I felt I needed a better working title for the fourth Bree Mystery than Bree # 4. Or Bree 4 restart, which is what the .docx file is titled. So I spent about three seconds thinking about the story and what Bree was doing, and another four seconds thinking of songs. Stayin’ Alive by the Bee Gees popped into my head and I thought, “Good enough.” And it was.

My youngest doesn’t like Stayin’ Alive because there is no twist on the song title. She says Stayin’ Dead would be better even though it makes absolutely no sense in the context of the story. Not that it matters when it’s just used as a working title.

I’m at that point again where I have to start thinking about naming this book. There used to be this couple, marly and r, who hung out on Arghink. They would make lists of titles for me. And then they would test them out on their friends. I just loved that. I love the team feeling, the fun of the game when people engage me with title ideas. The fact that they would then test them on their friends was icing on the cake.

I think about marly and r whenever I’m thinking up titles. I wonder where they are and if they are still together. If they are both healthy and why neither of them has turned back up even though surely his tour of duty is over now. I’m worried about them, as silly as that sounds. Two people I’ve never met, but who engaged with me in a meaningful way, who I had fun with and was grateful for and to. They’ve gone missing – and I know that’s what happens on the internet, we didn’t really know each other after all – but there is a hole there. Even though I get to play with lots of other people creating titles and characters, reaching out across the internet to make friends, there is still a hole.

So if you are out there marly and r, know that I am wishing you the best lives and the most fun, and all good things. I miss that short time we had together. There is a place inside me where you will always belong. Be well. Be happy.

Cover_One Night in the Spa - Kathy Lyons One Night in the Spa
by Kathy Lyons

What starts out as a simple massage treatment for spa manager David’s best friend Kim, turns into a night of seduction and sexual discovery.

Always relegated to the friend zone, David is determined to show Kim what she’s been missing…one erogenous zone at a time. Sure, their friendship is on the line. And sure, David’s hiding a motive larger than either him or Kim. But the second his hands touch her smooth skin, he just doesn’t care anymore.

Kim’s been so focused on the loss of her sports career that she’s had no time for romance or sex. But her response to David can’t be denied. Is it just that her body’s been missing out, or could her heart be involved too?

by Robin Bielman

Archeologist Lucy Davenport made a promise to retrieve an elusive piece of history buried in the walls of an iconic Indian village. But when she draws unwanted attention that interferes with her secret plans, she’s forced to risk it all with a man who threatens not only her goal, but the walls she’s carefully constructed around her heart.

Keats McCall is an environmental preservationist navigating the globe on behalf of heritage protection. When he catches Lucy at his latest project, he suspects she’s up to something. She secretive, sexy as hell—and has trouble written all over her. He devises a plan to keep her close so he can keep an eye on her. But what he isn’t prepared for is just how close he wants to get.

Robin Bielman lives in Southern California, a bike ride away from the ocean if she’s feeling really adventurous. She loves books and baking and running on the treadmill while watching her favorite TV shows. When she’s not reading or writing her next story, she’s spending time with her high school sweetheart husband and two sons, most likely watching, playing, or discussing baseball. She drives too fast, drinks too much caffeine, and if every day were Cupcake Day, she’d be a happy camper! She loves to connect with readers. Cover_Take Me (Take a Chance #4) - Diane Alberts Take Me (Take a Chance #4)
by Diane Alberts

Married in the morning…  Professional heartbreaker Mike Worth thrived on the chase—and dancer Morgan Collins represented the ultimate prize. But there was no way he was going to throw away his single-man status…not even for an elusive redhead with sparkling eyes and mile-long legs. So how did he let one drunken Vegas night end with I do instead of hell no?

Morgan’s life revolved around her career and she had no intention of letting a man interfere—even if Mike made her question all her rules about love. At his urging, she reluctantly agreed to give their spur-of–moment marriage a chance. But once their trial-honeymoon ended, would she choose to follow the dance and leave her unforgettable husband behind?

Diane Alberts has always been a dreamer with a vivid imagination, but it wasn’t until 2011 that she put her pen where her brain was, and became a published author.  Since receiving her first contract offer, she has yet to stop writing. Though she lives in the mountains, she really wishes she was surrounded by a hot, sunny beach with crystal clear water. She lives in Northeast Pennsylvania with her four kids, a husband, a cat, and a Senegal parrot. In the rare moments when she’s not writing, she can usually be found hunched over one knitting project or another.

Oh Look, It’s Friday

I just spent an entire day figuring out how to make buttons and get them to link properly. And now it’s Friday. It’s Friday and I haven’t gone to bed from Thursday yet. Guess I missed it.

But look what I can do:

div.maxbutton-27-container { float: left; } a.maxbutton-27 { text-decoration: none; color: #381315; font-family: Arial; font-size: 16px; font-style: normal; font-weight: bold; padding-top: 15px; padding-right: 25px; padding-bottom: 15px; padding-left: 25px; background-color: #e67acd; background: linear-gradient(#e67acd 45%, #87265a); background: -moz-linear-gradient(#e67acd 45%, #87265a); background: -o-linear-gradient(#e67acd 45%, #87265a); background: -webkit-gradient(linear, left top, left bottom, color-stop(.45, #e67acd), color-stop(1, #87265a)); border-style: solid; border-width: 1px; border-color: #940a48; border-radius: 4px; -moz-border-radius: 4px; -webkit-border-radius: 4px; text-shadow: -1px -1px 0px #872641; box-shadow: 0px 0px 2px #333333; -pie-background: linear-gradient(#e67acd 45%, #87265a); position: relative; behavior: url("http://kategeorge.com/wp-content/plug... } a.maxbutton-27:visited { text-decoration: none; color: #381315; } a.maxbutton-27:hover { text-decoration: none; color: #ffffff; background-color: #2270df; background: linear-gradient(#2270df 45%, #12295d); background: -moz-linear-gradient(#2270df 45%, #12295d); background: -o-linear-gradient(#2270df 45%, #12295d); background: -webkit-gradient(linear, left top, left bottom, color-stop(.45, #2270df), color-stop(1, #12295d)); border-color: #0f2557; text-shadow: -1px -1px 0px #12295d; box-shadow: 0px 0px 2px #333333; -pie-background: linear-gradient(#2270df 45%, #12295d); position: relative; behavior: url("http://kategeorge.com/wp-content/plug... }Two Badass Broads

Aren’t I clever. I have to go to bed now.

The Two Badass Broads Kickstarter is live!

It’s like pre-ordering for indie authors, only this time it’s two books instead of only one. Go check it out, and if you’re feeling generous, you know, PLEDGE!

The Septic

I’ve got a new short story up on the Short Story page. Where else would it be?

It’s titled The Septic and it’s a little darker than my usual stuff.

It’s about a woman who gets herself free. You know; “slip out the back, Jack. Make a new plan, Stan…”

Five Things You’ll Never Hear Me Say (Stolen from Delia Moran)

My brains are focused elsewhere so when I came across an older post of Delia Moran’s I decided I could in good conscience steal it. I knew D wouldn’t mind too much and probably wouldn’t sue me. Besides I’m not actually stealing her list. Just the idea.

5. I couldn’t sleep another minute.

(I will however say “God I need a nap,” about 50 times a day.

4. I love to clean my house.

(I do however love having a clean house. Not gonna happen.)

3.  I love to sweat.

(I don’t even like to think about sweating. Thus my very round figure.)

2. I am so on top of my life.

(I stole this post. ‘nough said.)

1. No, I’m not interested in a writer’s residency in Ireland.

(Are you kidding? I’m on that like white on rice. – or brown on rice, depends what kind of rice you like.)

The Lighthouse Quilt – or – Tea in the Lighthouse

No, it doesn’t have lighthouses on it, although these ladies do make lighthouse quilts and hangings. 111_8862 111_8864

[image error]I stopped at a lighthouse that served tea. There was also a craft room. At first glance I didn’t see anything I particularly wanted and I headed up stairs to the second floor where the lighthouse family lived back when a lighthouse keeper was needed. Nowadays the light is automated and doesn’t need tending. (actually I stopped at a number of lighthouses, I like them.)   111_8867

On the second floor, where the children’s bedrooms had been was an old light house keepers cot with a beautiful (and expensive) quilt on top of it. I think I took a picture… Yep, I did (see above). I walked into the second bedroom and there were four ladies working on various crafts. One was hand quilting on a quilting frame. One was crocheting, one doing needlework, and one – oh heck, I can see the project in my mind but can’t remember what she was doing on it. Drat. Rug hooking? No. She sometimes does, but that’s not what she was working on. Heck.

On the walls hung gorgeous quilts for sale. WAY expensive (as they should be) but a lap quilt was on sale and I could just about justify it. I went up to the top of the lighthouse and took pictures and then down to the bottom to have tea and contemplate the quilt.

111_8873 Tea, Pig and beautiful view.
111_8872 Beautiful tea cups. I love pretty tea things.

I bought the quilt, and a pig that made me smile. I couldn’t leave the pig behind. The lovely Lighthouse Lady that served me tea (she gave me a whole pot, because the craft ladies had the single pots upstairs in the craft room,) gave me the tea for free. So sweet.

111_8875 One of my sons holding the lap quilt for me. He needs a hair cut!

The story behind this quilt: A friend of Irene’s sister, if I have the story straight, found the diamond pieces in her attic. The fabrics are supposed to be quite old. Anyway she gave the pieces to Irene’s sister who created the squares and put together the quilt top. Irene, Theresa and Edith did the hand quilting. It was sashed and bound by Lorraine. Oh, it says on the back the Blocks were made by Eileen. I’m not sure if that’s Irene’s sister or not. Perhaps they’ll see this and correct me. It’s a star and crescent lap quilt. And I love it. Thanks ladies, I enjoyed my afternoon with you!

Nova Scotia

(Pictures to come. I left the dern photo card in the car.)

ETA: At the Digby Visitors Center – wonderful WiFi to add my photos!

This is the view from the place I’m staying in Nova Scotia, Clementsport is the name of the town I think. It’s about half an hour north of Digby – the town that the ferry from St. John sails into. Not that I’m taking the Ferry. It’s hella expensive and only saves two and a half hours of driving time. We’ll be going around.

I’m alone for the day. Due to my oldest daughter’s need to see her boyfriend before he goes back to university, my three companions (and dog) have headed home a day early and I will pick up the four intrepid French speakers from university. They’ve been at a French immersion summer program for five weeks. I think it’s likely I will spend two days in a car with four fifteen year olds all speaking French. What fun!

I can understand a small amount of French, things my mother used to say like close the door and window. Also shut your mouth. That might come in handy on a drive with four teens.

Meanwhile I will spend the day alone (Yay!) trying to get some writing done and probably napping. I’ll have to find a coffee shop with wireless to get this posted and check my email. I probably have hundreds of emails to weed through.

I wish I’d thought to take photos of the view yesterday when it was sunny. It’s very beautiful here.

PS. I’m posting this from a Tim Horton’s. I just ate a Boston Cream Donut. Yum.
