This is a good, practical book about power: how to get it and what to do with it. Like some of the other reviewers said, Robert Greene's 48 Laws of Power may be more comprehensive, and some of the studies Pfeffer cites are suspect. But my main issue ...more

Missing Person: Alice feels like a contemporary, contemporary take on the Maigret formula, and no doubt that was the intention.

Lawrence Durrell
“Somewhere in the heart of experience there is an order and a coherence which we might purprise if we were attentive enough, loving enough, or patient enough.”
Lawrence Durrell

Agnar Mykle
“...in his heart of hearts he could almost wish that, when he was grown up, his life should consist of nothing but nonsense: just music, love, literature, carefree friendship, a life brimming with glorious, intoxicating Olympian nonsense.”
Agnar Mykle

Stephen Vizinczey
“I had affairs with a few girls of my own age, and they taught me that no girl, however intelligent and war-hearted, can possibly know or feel half as much at twenty as she will at thirty-five.”
Stephen Vizinczey, In Praise of Older Women: The Amorous Recollections of András Vajda

Graham Greene
“To be in love is to see yourself as someone else sees you, it is to be in love with the falsified and exalted image of yourself. In love we are incapable of honor - the courageous act is no more than playing a part to an audience of two.”
Graham Greene

Christopher Morley
“When you sell a man a book you don’t sell him just twelve ounces of paper and ink and glue—you sell him a whole new life. Love and friendship and humour and ships at sea by night—there’s all heaven and earth in a book, a real book I mean.”
Christopher Morley, Parnassus on Wheels
