I would love to hang out with the Elves in some enchanted forest like Lothlorien. But, every forest is beautiful and enchanted. I would want to go somewhere with no earthly equivalent, like Niven's Ringworld, with its arch, the strange inverted horizon. (less)

Eagles/Steely Dan in LA

On Friday, January 5th, my wife and I were at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles to see The Eagles, with Steely Dan as the opening act. It was the first of a four-night set of shows to kick off the last leg of the Eagles “Long Goodbye” tour. Lisa and I have been Eagles fans our whole life. I’ve become a big Steely Dan fan in recent years, and I fondly remember playing “Peg” in my middle school jazz band Read more of this blog post »

What a profound and moving book this is! The Grapes of Wrath was first published in 1939. I read it in 2010 at the end of the Great Recession, and it felt relevant then. It feels honest and relevant now during the viciously cruel Trump administration ...more

James Bond stories are formulaic and cliché at this point. Casino Royale, however, is the book that started it all - the very first James Bond story. If you have seen the movie starring Daniel Craig, that film is one of the few that hews closely to t ...more

Cassandra Clare
“Ah,” said a voice from the doorway, “having your annual ‘everyone thinks Will is a lunatic’ meeting, are you?
“It’s biannual,” said Jem. “And no, this is not that meeting.”
Cassandra Clare, Clockwork Prince

“If you can quit, then quit. If you can't quit, you're a writer.”
R.A. Salvatore

J.R.R. Tolkien
“We set out to save the Shire, Sam and it has been saved - but not for me.”
J.R.R. Tolkien, The Return of the King

J.K. Rowling
“Do you see, Harry? Do you see the flaw in my brilliant plan now? I had fallen into the trap I had foreseen, that I had told myself I could avoid, that I must avoid.”

“I don’t —”

“I cared about you too much,” said Dumbledore simply. “I cared more for your happiness than your knowing the truth, more for your peace of mind than my plan, more for your life than the lives that might be lost if the plan failed. In other words, I acted exactly as Voldemort expects we fools who love to act.

“Is there a defense? I defy anyone who has watched you as I have — and I have watched you more closely than you can have imagined — not to want to save you more pain than you had already suffered. What did I care if numbers of nameless and faceless people and creatures were slaughtered in the vague future, if in the here and now you were alive, and well, and happy? I never dreamed that I would have such a person on my hands.”
J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

Neil Gaiman
“The best thing about writing fiction is that moment where the story catches fire and comes to life on the page, and suddenly it all makes sense and you know what it’s about and why you’re doing it and what these people are saying and doing, and you get to feel like both the creator and the audience. Everything is suddenly both obvious and surprising… and it’s magic and wonderful and strange.”
Neil Gaiman
