Waking Up

Hello Everyone,

Listen, I've been AWOL since I first accepted an author page on this site in 2017, and I've come to the conclusion that it's about dang time that ended. Bad stuff is going on in the world. Many of us are at home, some in seclusion. We're concerned. We're waiting. If ever there were a time to honor the human connections the web makes possible, it's right the heck now.

So, what I'm saying is, I'm here now, for good, & it's past time I gave this GR community the respect & gratitude it deserves. (Seriously. 156 of you fine people followed a page I completely neglected. That's both humbling & amazing! Or, as my niece would say: humbl-mazing.[1])

As a result, I've opened my questions & will answer anything you've got. No time limit. No question limit. No category too crazy. Books? Let's do it. My books? Why, don't mind if I do. Whisky? Marmalade? Whiskey Marmalade? The answer to all three is yes. (Obviously, I prefer to use a blended whiskey pre-canning, not too smoky, not too sweet.)

Now, if you know my work, or even possibly like it, you might be aware that—on occasion—I can write some deep & scary thrillers about deep & scary people (I blame my face-to-face research for All Involved & Safe really), but I just wanted to let you know I, myself, as a human person, am not scary. I am smart, and kind, and generally pretty dang cheery. Promise.

So, yes, I've been a novelist for almost 20 years, taught creative writing for 9.5 of those at Chapman University (incl. courses in short stories, the novel, oral storytelling & writing for video games), got tattooed by this amazing artist on over 60% of my body, and despite, being a total outsider, conducted a decade of research in South Central L.A. with former Latino gang members, sheriffs, & more. But all that is just a way of saying, there's a bit of experience I can speak on, should you choose to reach out, but no need to limit it to those. I mean, I'm clearly an expert in marmalade as well, so there's always that.[2]

All best & look forward to hearing from you,
Ryan

P.S. Did I really did just sign this like an e-mail? Yes. Yes, I did. Why? Well, I don't know, precisely. But it feels right. So let's roll with it.

Footnotes:
[1] — She would not say that, she would never say that, and she would hate me for saying I told you she did, but I shall risk her wrath!
[2] — This, by the way, is categorically untrue, though I'd do my dangedest to answer any questions on it, even if I had to research it!
