In my opinion it is a symptom of simply not knowing what to write. A bit like driving in a car without knowing where you are going. You have to stop and figure it out. The cure: stop trying to write. Think about WHAT you are going to write. Don’t write it. Make notes. Doodle. Do bullet points of what you are going to write. Don’t write prose, just notes. When you are finally happy with WHAT you are going to write, write a summary of it. Jill goes to the shops but falls down the escalator. Then expand the summary. Jill … trips on her new flares and falls down the escalator. Expand some more. Jill, too busy eating ice cream to look where she’s going, trips.. etc.

Bui…moreFor aspiring writers the best advice is to give yourself time. It takes time to write a novel, but it takes even longer to learn to write a novel. Build time into your life for writing, even if it's only an hour a day. On the train to work, in bed before you go to sleep, on your lunchbreak, over your summer holidays, do a course (which will force you to spend the time)... find the time and build the routine into your life. Once you have that, then you can start putting the building blocks into place, and keep improving until you are great. Nobody becomes a professional golfer on their first trip to the golf course. Very few become a professional writer without putting in the hours. Good luck!(less)
