They Brewed Beer There

Charles Ameringer Jim: Good to hear from you. I tried to send you a message to thank you for adding THE OLD SPOOK to your "to read" list, but Goodreads informed me that you weren't accepting messages. Anyway, to answer your questions, I haven't read either THE COMPANY or THE TOURIST, but they're on my "to read" list. Jim Bruno is a terrific writer and knowledgeable about the spy game. I haven't been to Cuba since 1980, but Havana is one of my favorite cities; if you get a chance to go, by all means do it (but read Graham Greene's OUR MAN IN HAVANA before you do). About trailers and "temporary" buildings on the D.C. Mall housing the OSS and the CIA (before Langley), yes they were there; in many respects the Mall is a fitting place for the WWII Memorial, because it was a venue for much of went on during the war. Hope you enjoy THE OLD SPOOK, and let me know what you think. Best wishes, Charles

message 1: by Jim

Jim Crocker Hi, Charles and thanks for accepting my friend request. I notice that Bruno is your favorite author. I like him to and have chatted with him as well. I hope to be able to visit Cuba some day.

What do you think of these two books?
The Company by Robert Littell
The Tourist (The Tourist, #1) by Olen Steinhauer
And then there's Alan Furst and Phillip Kerr. All of these guys are my favorites.

I recall OSS being in some trailers on the Mall at some point. Is that true? I don't travel so much anymore, but plan to visit the Spy Museum in DC if I get back there again. Last time I was there, I spent some time walking the halls of Crystal City, which was pretty weird. At the time, it seemed like there was no real security at all. But that was 30 years ago.

I found your book in my Kindle last night and started it. It sounds great.

Cheers!
Jim in MT
