Born fifth of 10 children in TN, grew up exploring mountains, waterfalls and historical sites, won full work/study scholarship to St. Mary's College, Notre Dame, IN. Yearbook editor in high school, while in college wrote for magazine and radio station at across-the-street school, University of Notre Dame.Biggest thrill: interviewing Betty Friedan, being part of the civil rights struggle of the time.

After journalism courses at Northwestern U in Chicago, graduated from SMC, then returned South to Atlanta, reporting for United Press International, including Dr. King and events after Memphis. She told me she wanted me to meet with Majok Marier, one of the younger men, who had penned 100 pages about his escape from war that came to his village in South Sudan in 1987. I talked with him, read his pages, realized I needed answers to a million questions, and we set about his answering some of those. Eventally, I could fashion some chapters and make a fuzzy outline, and we approached our publisher, who liked our picture and first chapter, and bought it. So--short answer, it presented itself to me.(less)

Talk about a long time...

I look at the last blog entry here and I cringe--it's been a loooong time! Since then, I've been gifted with and used a Kindle several times, although I still prefer hard copy--it's easier to book mark, pick up and flip through, and it just feels so substantial!
