Memories
Memories
Do you remember?
When friends get together after not seeing one another for some time, it is inevitable that one or the other will ask this question.
Our memories are precious to us.
Good ones bring joy. Sad ones stir our emotions.
Holidays are special memories, for then there is time to bond together with your loved ones, with far less stress.
But for me it was the planning of a special holiday that left me with amazing memories. It was a holiday that many dreamed about, but few have the chance of going.
It was a trip to the far, frozen north of America. Alaska – that wild, wet, land!
On a previous holiday we, my husband and myself, had overheard someone speak of a trip on a fishing vessel through the Inner Passage off Alaska to see Orca Whales.
Fishing vessel – no, not for us, but a trip to see the land of glaciers and Orca whales and polar bears began to be a reality in our plan for a holiday.
All the planning fell into place and as I thanked God for this opportunity it seemed as though He was saying, ‘My world is beautiful and I delight in showing it to you!”
We left South Africa and went via Singapore to Vancouver and then on to Anchorage in Alaska. From there we went on a 12 day land tour across this land crossing the Arctic Circle, going through the National Park at Denali, and managing to see bears in their natural habitat. We went on a paddle steamer down the Yukon River, and panned for gold in the Klondike. We walked the boardwalks in Dawson City, and went on the train down the Whitehorse trail that the miners used to get to the goldfields.
At Skagway we boarded a Cruise Liner, and spent a few days off the coast of Alaska, watching the glaciers calve, and the magnificent Orca whales in pods around the ship.
It is now 15 years since we took that holiday, but the memories are as clear as though it was yesterday. God showed us a part of His Creation far different to our sunny South Africa. How diverse is the earth that He gave us! Yet in all that we saw there was a profound sense of His presence. He had given a sense of adventure to those first explorers, who battled the elements and the sheer loneliness of the far distant land. But through their perseverance they have given modern man a chance to explore places that before would have been impossible to reach.
God has given us all the ability to remember. Most of all He wants us to enjoy the world He has given us, and will gladly take us there in His care.
To God be the glory – His world is beautiful!
