“When the web started, I used to get really grumpy with people because they put my poems up. They put my stories up. They put my stuff up on the web. I had this belief, which was completely erroneous, that if people put your stuff up on the web and you didn’t tell them to take it down, you would lose your copyright, which actually, is simply not true.
And I also got very grumpy because I felt like they were pirating my stuff, that it was bad. And then I started to notice that two things seemed much more significant. One of which was… places where I was being pirated, particularly Russia where people were translating my stuff into Russian and spreading around into the world, I was selling more and more books. People were discovering me through being pirated. Then they were going out and buying the real books, and when a new book would come out in Russia, it would sell more and more copies. I thought this was fascinating, and I tried a few experiments. Some of them are quite hard, you know, persuading my publisher for example to take one of my books and put it out for free. We took “American Gods,” a book that was still selling and selling very well, and for a month they put it up completely free on their website. You could read it and you could download it. What happened was sales of my books, through independent bookstores, because that’s all we were measuring it through, went up the following month three hundred percent.
I started to realize that actually, you’re not losing books. You’re not losing sales by having stuff out there. When I give a big talk now on these kinds of subjects and people say, “Well, what about the sales that I’m losing through having stuff copied, through having stuff floating out there?” I started asking audiences to just raise their hands for one question. Which is, I’d say, “Okay, do you have a favorite author?” They’d say, “Yes.” and I’d say, “Good. What I want is for everybody who discovered their favorite author by being lent a book, put up your hands.” And then, “Anybody who discovered your favorite author by walking into a bookstore and buying a book raise your hands.” And it’s probably about five, ten percent of the people who actually discovered an author who’s their favorite author, who is the person who they buy everything of. They buy the hardbacks and they treasure the fact that they got this author. Very few of them bought the book. They were lent it. They were given it. They did not pay for it, and that’s how they found their favorite author. And I thought, “You know, that’s really all this is. It’s people lending books. And you can’t look on that as a loss of sale. It’s not a lost sale, nobody who would have bought your book is not buying it because they can find it for free.”
What you’re actually doing is advertising. You’re reaching more people, you’re raising awareness. Understanding that gave me a whole new idea of the shape of copyright and of what the web was doing. Because the biggest thing the web is doing is allowing people to hear things. Allowing people to read things. Allowing people to see things that they would never have otherwise seen. And I think, basically, that’s an incredibly good thing.”

G.G., CHIEF OF ORDNANCE”
― The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn
“down these mean streets a man must go who is not himself mean, who is neither tarnished nor afraid. He is the hero; he is everything. He must be a complete man and a common man and yet an unusual man. He must be, to use a rather weathered phrase, a man of honor—by instinct, by inevitability, without thought of it, and certainly without saying it. He must be the best man in his world and a good enough man for any world.
“He will take no man’s money dishonestly and no man’s insolence without a due and dispassionate revenge. He is a lonely man and his pride is that you will treat him as a proud man or be very sorry you ever saw him.
“The story is this man’s adventure in search of a hidden truth, and it would be no adventure if it did not happen to a man fit for adventure. If there were enough like him, the world would be a very safe place to live in, without becoming too dull to be worth living in.”

It turns out that I have an author page here on Goodreads:http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/...
I've added the ebooks I've published so far, and I've requested being added to the Author Program. Once I'm approved I should be able to better promote my writing here.
I have published this week's ebook:Masie's Mind
https://www.smashwords.com/books/view...
Eile and Sunny are two adventurous twenty-something girls who met when Eile rescued Sunny from being kidnapped by enemies of her parents. They fell in love, and after the crisis had been resolved they decided to live together.
Sunny was still in danger, so their mentor, Medb hErenn, acquired a house for them in a secure gated community. She gave them the run of the place, but there was one room, in the basement, that was off limits.
That didn't sit well with Sunny, who burned with curiosity to discover what the mysterious room contained. When she and Eile finally gained access by accident, they discovered that they shared the house with a secret and rather unusual roommate....
It is free and available in Kindle, EPUB, PDF, LRF, PDB, RTF, and Plain Text platforms.
I have published my first ebook through Smashwords:Barbarians R Us -- In the Dreamlands, Medb hErenn works as a troubleshooter, using her powers and experience to solve other people's problems. When a barbarian causes trouble in Ulthar, she is asked to bring him back to make restitution, but she doubts he will come quietly. Can she persuade him to return, or will she have to use force?

It is free, and it is available in the following formats: Kindle, EPUB, PDF, RTF, LRF, PDB, Plain Text and HTML.
I will publish a new ebook each weekend, and I have 48 left.
I have finished posting all the stories I planned to here on Goodreads, though more will come in future.Since Goodreads automatically posts updates whenever I post a story, I won't be doing that myself from now on, but I will still announce when I publish an ebook.
Thank you.
I've been on Goodreads almost a month now, and only today I learned that I can post stories here for people to read and comment on.I will be busy posting everything I've published on Wattpad, then I will post a URL here.
Thank you.

Just saw this on Facebook:http://davidgaughran.wordpress.com/20...
I doubt any of you are supportive of Vanity Presses, but I was surprised to learn that big publishers are now buying up and running VP's, and not to reform them.
I also found it interesting that when the author called on writers organizations to de-list offending publishers, he didn't mention the HWA (Horror Writers Association). That might have been an oversight on his part, but I would not be surprised if the HWA is giving big publishers a free pass on this issue.
I have sent a request to be made a Goodreads Author. I'll let everyone know if that's approved.I will also announce when I publish stories through Smashwords, Kindle, and Kobe.
Meanwhile, I have also set up an account with Wattpad where I will be posting free stories to try to gain a wider readership.
http://www.wattpad.com/user/Kevin_L_O...
Those of you who wish may follow me there, but I will also make announcements here and on Facebook and Twitter.
Thank you for following my efforts.

Today is the first scheculed #PitMad Twitter pitch party for this year.
