The Wreck explores how examining past traumas can reshape life in the present

Florent Maurin talks about how The Wreck explores our messy, complicated relationship with trauma and how reflecting on it can help us better understand (or change) who we are now.

The IGF (Independent Games Festival) aims to encourage innovation in game development and to recognize independent game developers advancing the medium. Every year, Game Developer sits down with the finalists for the IGF ahead of GDC to explore the themes, design decisions, and tools behind each entry. Game Developer and GDC are sibling organizations under Informa Tech.

The Wreck follows Junon as she navigates her mother’s imminent death, exploring memories through a horrifying car crash in the past that shapes and forms everything in the present.

Game Developer caught up with the game’s lead writer and designer, Florent Maurin, to talk about the real car accident that inspired the game’s core moment, exploring the messy and weird ways that real people respond to trauma and tragedy, and how creating this experience helped him explore his own personal thoughts, fears, and family connections.

Who are you, and what was your role in developing The Wreck?

My name is Florent Maurin. I'm 44 and I live in southern Burgundy, France. I was lead writer and game designer on The Wreck.

What's your background in making games?

After working as a journalist for 10 years, I founded The Pixel Hunt in 2014. Our studio specializes in what I like to describe as 'reality-inspired games,' which, while striving to be entertaining, are also designed to offer commentary on the world we live in.

How did you come up with the concept for The Wreck?

One morning, as we were putting the final touches on our first commercial game, Bury me, my Love, I was in a car accident with my youngest daughter in the back of the car. Luckily, we got out of it okay (my daughter didn't even wake up from her nap!), but the experience was rather intense.

I actually experienced what I thought was but a movie trope: the crash seemed to happen in super slow motion and was interspersed with flashes from my life. I experienced memories from my childhood, weird out-of-place thoughts ("Should I prune my cherry tree?") and millions of other signs of a frantic neuronal activity—maybe related to my brain trying to find a useful memory to help get me out of this perilous situation. A few moments later, as I was picking up broken car parts from the road, I already knew I wanted to turn this experience into a game.

What development tools were used to build your game?

We used Unity as a game engine, Blender for 3D assets production, Fmod for dynamic sound management, and Ink to manage all things story-related. A big shout-out to Inkle, by the way: it's amazing of them to have made their narrative engine open source.

The Wreck centers on a devastating question about a dying (and hated) parent. What thoughts went into making this challenging choice into a major part of the game?

My sister Coralie (who co-wrote the game with me) and I lost our father at a young age. Even though we were never faced with such a dilemma Junon has to deal with in the game, we still accompanied his last moments, and that life experience made us grow and bond. I guess my desire to talk about that—how do you face the death of people that are important to you—comes from that personal experience, and the good that came out of it through the pain.

That being said, Junon has a way more difficult relationship with her mother than we had with our dad. I guess that came to be because we wanted to reflect on whether love and hope can prevail even in dysfunctional families—and how.

The game tackles many complex questions and thoughts with a human messiness and complexity. What challenges come from facing these kinds of ideas head-on in writing?

We adopted a character-based approach: we had our cast of characters and interpersonal dynamics before we even knew what was going to happen in the story. Then, we let them surprise us, putting them in specific situations and "letting" them lead in the most spontaneous, messy, weird, human ways possible.

More often than not, when people write, they use their characters to advance the plot. That makes for stories that are often well-oiled and relentless, but that also can feel mechanical, as everything happens for a reason. On the contrary, we decided to let things happen, then see how to wrap them together (if it was possible at all). I think that can give birth to stories that feel way less controlled, but also way more believable, and it seemed like a better fit for the kind of narrative we wanted for The Wreck.

How do you tackle all of the weird, dark, wild, and unexpected ways in which people face the most difficult moment of their lives in believable ways?

My personal take on this is, there is no "right" way to react to the shit life throws at you. When I worked on Bury me, my Love, I read a lot of stories by refugees who fled from Syria and found refuge in Europe—which is what the game is about. Among those, I was struck by the experience of a couple that made it by flying to... Brazil, and then back to Germany, through a very bizarre sequence of events. That's when I realized that, if you want to write a compelling story about a real-life event (especially a dark one), you have to be as messy, weird, and uncontrollable as life can be.

Take grief, for instance. Through a lot of works of fiction, we have a preconceived idea of what it is—the Kübler-Ross 5 stages model, the crying, the devastation... But in reality, the experience is way more complex and weird than that. I understand the need to resort to tropes in hopes to establish a connection with a wide audience, but I believe people can actually connect way more intensely with a character that seems weird as long as there's an underlying coherence —a method to that madness.

You mentioned in a previous interview that you really try to get into a character's mindset when you're writing about them. Can you tell us about how you get yourself into this mindset? How do you get yourself to see the world through someone else's eyes?

It's a tough one! I don't want to perpetuate the myth that pretends that a writer lives, eats and breathes with their characters because I think romanticizing our activity too much does more harm than good. But it's true that, after a little while, you tend to consider every life situation, even the most trivial, through your main character's eyes.

For instance, I remember quite vividly dropping a mug full of coffee, one morning. That made a heck of a mess, but my first reflex, instead of screaming in rage or crying in agony like any normal people, was to ask myself: "How would Junon react to such a blatant display of clumsiness?" I'm not sure how exactly I got into that mindset, but it's pretty useful because, day after day, it provides you with an ever-more-intimate knowledge of your hero, and that's a tremendous help when you then throw them in weird situation. It's basically a useless skill to clean up the kitchen, though.

The main character, Junon, is also dealing with her own challenges in her life and the aftermath of a car crash in The Wreck. You had mentioned in that same interview with Game Developer that this game was developed based on your own experiences in a car crash. Did working on this game help you with your emotions around that moment in any way?

It did. And sorry, but this answer will contain a spoiler for the game's plot. I think the most striking part of the car crash experience wasn't the crash itself, but the sudden realization of how fast your life can be completely transformed. I could have died in that accident, or worse, something could have happened to my daughter. I am a fairly anxious person, and since I became a father, the idea that something could happen to my daughter has been haunting me. I think all parents have had to deal with such thoughts at some point.

So for me, working on The Wreck was a way to explore that fear—to confront it instead of brushing it under the rug—and to relieve myself from some of the distress it provoked. I hope that, by doing so, I've also been able to come up with a story that may provide some sort of catharsis to other parents out there.

What effects did creating art around such a moment in your life affect you, in good ways and bad?

One of the best things about working on The Wreck was that it helped me realize how close my sister Coralie and I are. More often than not, I would pitch her ideas for characters, dynamics, and scenes, and after a few words, she would completely get what I was aiming at. This was nothing magical (even though Coralie's a very gifted writer). It was just that our common life experiences, that we had never discussed openly before, provided us with a deep understanding of each other's mindset. We have very different lives, but the bond that we have really shone through our common creative process.

As for the bad ways in which it affected me, I don't thing there are, to be honest (except maybe that, because we had a lot to do and not many resources, it was a rather draining experience). And also, when you make something that's this personal, you're even more affected by negative criticism. Don't get me wrong, the public reception for the game has been stellar, but you know that meme that shows an artist only noticing a single negative social media post in a sea of positive ones? Well, that was me for a long time after we released the game.

A female-presenting person sitting alone in a blue-tinted hallway

Much of the game is spent piecing together memories on the worst day of its main character's life. What thoughts went into creating the ways in which players can explore and find hidden elements of those memories?

The process has been rather variable depending on the memory. Some were clearly identified narrative devices that we absolutely needed to push the story forward. But for others, it started with a visual idea that our art director, Alexandre Grilletta (Alex), had. For instance, the Russian doll style dollhouse memory initially is something he thought would be pretty cool to experience, so he asked whether we saw room for a dollhouse in the story.

I found that way of doing things pretty cool, because having to make way for someone else's ideas is also a great way to come up with twists and turns that you would not necessarily imagine yourself. Of course, Alex's suggestions weren't coming out of nowhere because we were constantly pitching him the material we had. But I think this back-and-forth, iterative process made for a pretty original experience in the end.

What interested you in exploring story through examining and re-examining memories? About retreading these memories with new thoughts and ideas that recontextualize them?

It's kind of how I process the things that happen to me in real life, to be honest. More often than not, I happen to vividly remember scenes from the past without knowing why those specific moments stick, until at some point I experience a kind of tiny rapture. I make connections which weren't there the day before, or which I wasn't yet ready to bring to my own consciousness, if that makes sense. And suddenly, my whole reading of the situation is changed.

I think that's the most concrete example of what it actually feels like to experience growing up, and as we wanted The Wreck to be a story about growth, we figured it'd make sense to translate that feeling into a game mechanic.

The Wreck plays around with size, shape, and surreal visuals throughout its exploration of the past and memories. What ideas went into its visual style? Into the look of delving into the past?

Alex spent a lot of time thinking about that. The challenge was to convey a feeling that would be clearly different between the real world (what we call the "last day") and the memories, but he also really wanted to avoid the tropes usually activated to invoke the past—sepia tones, visual artifacts, items floating in some kind of foggy mist... Instead, he went with a more dreamlike style and experimented with slightly surreal concepts: impossible geometries, surprising match cuts, time lapses...

In The Wreck, each memory is different, but they all share a vivid, cinematic appearance. That also has to do with Junon being a screenwriter. We thought it might make sense for her memories to feel like cool movie shots.

Likewise, what ideas specifically went into the design of the car crash memory? Can you tell us about how you crafted this vital moment in the game?

This was a lot of work by our animator, Peggy Lecouvey. Alex and I watched a bunch of dashcam videos of crashes and spent quite a long time crashing cars in BeamNG Drive in order to block out a first version of the scene that worked. Then Peggy took over, and she's the one who came up with the final version.

The challenge was to have a scene that would both feel real, and even painful, when played at normal speed, but that would convey an eerie, surreal feeling when experienced in slo-mo, with items floating around the main character working as gameplay elements, as they are doors to Junon's memories. This took quite a lot of iterations, and we're really happy with the end result.

Writing: Write What You Know

Are you thinking, what does "write what you know" actually mean? Or that you don't know anything significant. Some of the most "insignificant" things are very significant. So, writing what you know is really kind of simple for the most part, depending on what the knowledge is. Whether about nuclear power or the workings of the heart, both physically, and most certainly, emotionally.

Things you are expert in and take for granted. That stuff that makes your friends and family roll their eyes, because they know this is your topic. Or they https://www.patreon.com/posts/writing-write-73444200?utm_medium=clipboard_copy&utm_source=copyLink&utm_campaign=postshare_creator

That may be true; but you can theorize from the limited material you receive, and run with it! You know a few people, or have seen them on TV. Some are sweet and stay that way, others are sweet sometimes and horrid under certain conditions and pressures, while others are never sweet.

Theorizing. It's a little bit of math, not complicated math, usually, just this emotion or desire plus another equals this other thing; except when this https://www.patreon.com/posts/references-are-72202224?utm_medium=clipboard_copy&utm_source=copyLink&utm_campaign=postshare_creator

MISSION:  To SHARE Historical Black, African, and People of Color (POC) Fiction author historical research references, story prompts, writer hacks, and links for writers and readers of People of Color Historical fiction and nonfiction.

Providing you with writing trigger topics and bits of history you never considered were a possibility. Or "someone" said it never was / never could have happened like that. They're wrong. And probably actually existed, was forgotten, ignored, or cast aside.

Plus, I'll be giving brief personal analyses on: character, a writer’s journey, and more that may prove helpful in creating your own colorful characters, in-depth stories, and completed published works.

WHY? WHAT'S IN IT FOR YOU?

Finding relevant reference materials remains scattered and haphazard.  Searching for historical information for People of Color isn't just as easy as digging out your old school history books.
Most often we aren't mentioned, well, not as thoroughly and heroically as European males.
Writing historically about People of Color to bring something new to readers' minds and emotions about People of Color in History is the plan.
We are people, with the same or similar wants, drives, hopes as everyone else.
Ethnic cultures are the unique seasoning for the people we were, are, and want to be and I hope to help you find thought and feel points on cultural points of view (POV) you never considered. Finding material that gives us a mental or emotional writing prompt, an urge to build it into a scene, one story, or an entire series.
Maybe its a tapestry image of an African Brit trumpeter for Henry VIII of England, a notice about a foreign black officer soldier who fought for King Henry VIII and his son, Edward—a man of African descent Knighted (Sir Pedro).

Or ... hm, what time periods of historical films do you love and want to see yourself in?

To be blunt, those of European descent, usually male, write themselves into the history of the Great Wall of China, Polynesia, and running with Mongol hordes.

If Europeans "might" be there, why not Africans, like Yasuke, the "Black Samurai / Black Ronin" or "African Samurai / African Ronin"?

Plus, marketing and making connections outside of the larger African American Book Clubs, when "lists" for Black Historical Fiction and Literature, because most are only rearranged rewrites of the SAME lists of older / classic African American or Black American tales. For example. Try searching for "African British Historical Fiction" sometime and see what limited material comes up. Even just African British, when Africans have been in Europe since, at least, Roman times. Or look for "African American Historical Fiction" that's not Z. N. Hurston, A. Walker, etc.Yes. Some newer books get listed but, you have to scroll and scroll to find the newer stories about older, more varied, or different tales.

Reprint_Inspiring adventures on the high seas through Sailwind's realistic take on sailing

 https://www.gamedeveloper.com/design/adventures-in-emergent-storytelling-from-sailwind-s-realistic-take-on-sailing

"In a game with no enemies or combat of any kind, the possibility of getting lost adds an element of risk and challenge. The risk of failure is what makes success meaningful, and it's one of the necessary elements of any game." John Harris Headshot John HarrisContributorDecember 16, 2021ss_fc583bf0d6940eec3d054560be55033e8055d4c9.1920x1080.jpg

Sailwind is a physics-based sailing simulator, largely made by one person. Your character is onboard a boat, and operates it by pulling ropes and spinning the wheel. There is a map (in your inventory), but it doesn’t tell your exact location. Instead you have to use other means to discover where you are and where you’re headed, and it’s up to you to figure out how to get to your destination.

Sailing isn't only about controlling a ship on the the open seas, however. Along the way, you are faced with survival and trading elements that help to create emergent tales of exploration and adventure. Of course, opposed to those meager trading efforts are the forces of wave and wind, storm and starvation as meaningful accomplishment can't truly be felt without a little risk thrown into the mix.

Coming from a background of VR development and immersive experiences, developer Raw Lion Workshop calls Sailwind their most ambitious project to-date. The dev explores that complexity in this chat with Game Developer, digging into what brought about this open-world sailing simulator, its realistic sailing physics, and the elements of survival, trading, and adventure that define this journey across the sea.

Game Developer: Sailwind is a full 3D sailing simulation made primarily by one person! How long have you been going, and what technology do you use to put it together? How do you handle creating the game's content?

Raw Lion Workshop: It's been close to three years since I started the project, though only the last two years were full time work. The game is made in Unity, using the Crest ocean asset for rendering the ocean and basic boat physics. Most of the other features I have developed on my own. The models and textures are made in Blender, and for sound effects I use creative commons and public domain sounds available online, often heavily edited to fit into the game.

All games that simulate some real-world activity must do so through some degree of representation, but Sailwind does a good job of exposing players to the details of how sailing works. Most nautical-themed games take a more game-ish approach to this subject, while Sailwind almost seems like it wants to teach players how to actually sail a boat. What caused you to think about going in this direction with the development, focusing on the kinds of details that triple-A games would strive to eliminate?

The project started as a simple prototype - I was just having some fun playing with a realistic sailing physics model. At this stage, I didn't really consider any game design or player experience aspects. As I played with my prototype, I realized that it was actually quite fun and satisfying to handle the sail, watch how it reacts to the wind and how it affects the boat and its movement, and that's when I decided to build a full game around it.

A Sailwind screenshot. The player looks out on the sea at night from aboard their small sailboat.

It was only after the game was released that I discovered how challenging this realistic sailing model was for many players. To be honest, it was quite a big surprise to find out just how much people struggled with it. After all, I thought, sailing really isn't that complicated, compared to, say, flying a plane in a flight simulator. If anything, I was worried the game would be too simple, and I was considering adding more complexity to the controls to make it more interesting and engaging. After many complaints about the steep learning curve (and a relatively high refund rate), I understood why the triple-A game studios often have to simplify their games so much. Big studios have to appeal to the widest possible audience in order to make a good return on their investment, and that means the barrier to entry for new players has to be as low as possible and the learning curve very forgiving. Unfortunately, such design generally makes the game less appealing for those who are looking for a deeper and more challenging experience.

I'm still trying to find the happy medium between making the game approachable and pleasant for new players with no sailing experience, and keeping the complexity, realism, and integrity. There is certainly a lot of satisfaction to be had when you master the techniques of sailing and navigation, and the learning and struggles can add to the experience and make it more meaningful. Games that hold your hand, give you lots of hints at every step, and pretty much play themselves don't provide that same sense of accomplishment and satisfaction. However, if faced with too much challenge at the start, many players will just quit in frustration.

Sailing is complicated. How does Sailwind go about helping players get their feet wet, so to speak, in learning to operate a boat?

Currently, the tutorial is quite basic - there's a scroll on your boat which contains text and pictures describing the basics of gameplay and sailing.

Improving the tutorial is definitely something I'm working on. It's all about finding the balance between smoothing out the learning curve to avoid the initial frustration, while still challenging the player to figure things out and learn by themselves. I've recently added a new tutorial feature which visually shows you the no go zone when trying to sail upwind, which is a very important concept when learning to sail. This new addition was controversial in the community for a good reason - features like this can diminish the sense of accomplishment and make the game feel too cheap and easy, so I am very cautious not to move too far in that direction.

Actually operating and manipulating a boat is just part of sailing of course. Some other games find it challenging to enable the player to find his position and get oriented in the world, even with the use of UI aids, but Sailwind don't use those on purpose! The possibility of getting lost, as in real life, is another part of the game. How does a player handle navigation, getting bearings and figuring out the best direction to head in?

Getting lost is fun! That's often when the real adventure starts, and it's a great opportunity for emergent challenges and organic stories to develop. Also, in a game with no enemies or combat of any kind, the possibility of getting lost adds an element of risk and challenge. The risk of failure is what makes success meaningful, and it's one of the necessary elements of any game.

In Sailwind, there are many ways to navigate, and you'll have to choose between them depending on your current situation. There is of course the compass, but if you accidentally drop it overboard (which does happen to many players, apparently!), you can also use the sun, or even the stars in the night sky, to find the cardinal directions.

There is also the quadrant (a simpler version of the sextant), which you can use to determine your latitude, and the chronocompass, a rather complicated tool which uses the sun and its shadow to find the latitude and longitude. More instruments will be added later on. Skilled use of these instruments is necessary in order to successfully complete long ocean voyages (which can take many hours in real time!).

It's easy to focus just on the sailing and neglect talking about the non-sailing aspects of the game. There's survival elements, and a basic trade simulation where the player takes on delivery jobs, and attempts to complete them for money while keeping his reputation up. How much of the game do these aspects make up? Are you considering deeping these elements of play, like, are there plans in the offing to require that players carry limes to prevent scurvy?

I actually don't consider those features as separate from the sailing aspect. For me, sailing is more than just controlling a boat. When I think of sailing, I think of adventure, travel, exploration. I think of brave men confronting the forces of nature on an epic journey towards the unknown. Without these aspects, sailing is reduced to just pulling ropes, turning the wheel, and steering the boat towards no particular goal. Those things aren't all that fun by themselves, it's exactly that context of the epic adventure that makes sailing so appealing.

The survival and trading elements in Sailwind serve that goal, they are there because without them the sailing wouldn't be "real" in some sense. The need to stock up on food and other supplies adds an element of risk and strategy, the trading and delivery missions mean you have a destination, a goal which is a part of a bigger story.

In Sailwind, you're not just sitting there watching your boat move through the water - you're on an epic voyage across a vast ocean, battling storms and overcoming challenges to deliver vital goods to people living in distant settlements. That's what sailing is really about!

This is also one of the main areas I want to develop further. Expanding the trading system is a high priority item on the roadmap at the moment, and there are also plans to expand food and drink systems, such as introducing the need for balanced nutrition and adding food spoilage.

A ship with two sails approaches a city along the shoreline.

One of the interesting design decisions you're made is to enforce the need to sleep. It's amazing really how many games handwave sleep away. A one-person vessel on the ocean has unique strategic requirements. The boat doesn't stay still while the player's character is unconscious, but continues to travel. What would you say this brings to the game?

As with most features of Sailwind, I didn't consciously think about the game design implications of the sleep system. It is simply something that just... made sense. After all, that's how sleeping works in the real world! As it turned out, it fits in the game quite well, but this is more of a happy accident than a planned decision.

First, it adds another layer to the challenge and decision making aspects, which is pretty important in a relatively simple game like Sailwind. Second, it gives players an opportunity to take a short break, maybe stretch a bit, shift their attention away from the game for a moment, which is probably a healthy thing to do in a long gaming session.

A concession it seems Sailwind must make to physical reality is the nature of the time scale compared to player's life. 24 game hours cannot equal 24 real hours if the game is to progress at a reasonable rate. How does Sailwind handle this? Does it make day lengths shorter, distances shorter, or speeds greater than in real life?

Sailwind takes place on a planet which is significantly smaller than Earth, and the distances and time are scaled down accordingly, but I've tried to keep this scaling somewhat consistent. That is, sailing around the globe in the game (not possible currently, by the way) might take a similar amount of days as it would in the real world on Earth.

The boats are generally slightly faster than they would be in real life, but not nearly as much as in most other sailing games. This slightly faster speed is purely a game design decision - realism is good and all, but going very slow can often feel frustrating and just not very fun.

Sailwind is a fascinating game even at this early stage. Part of what I find personally exciting about it is, it feels like a simulation of an ancient real-world activity that used to inspire a whole genre of literature. Sandbox games are kind of like a self-told storytelling device, a way to have imaginary adventures that can actually be affected by the player's actions, and Sailwind's concept is unusually powerful here. But that's just me; why did you decide to make this, what is it about the idea that pushes you to work on Sailwind every day?

I think the biggest advantage video games have over other media is precisely this potential to create dynamic and unique stories. These stories can be important and meaningful, they're more than just "fun". For me, it's these stories that can make playing a game a worthwhile experience, and that's why these are the types of games I'm interested in. I'm not really into games that try to capture your attention with highly engaging visuals, instant gratification or cheap rewards. That type of entertainment feels good in the moment, and can be highly addictive, but it leaves you drained, tired, and often feeling like you've just wasted your time doing nothing productive.

On the other hand, when you create and experience a meaningful story during your gaming session, it feels fulfilling - the time is not wasted, it was well spent. That's always my goal when making games. To provide more than just entertainment. I want the player to feel like they've spent their time well, and experienced something meaningful.
