I would say I don't have a favorite couple, however one does come to mind as one of the more dramatic and honest; Albee's George and Martha from his play "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf" strike me as perfect reflections of the culture of the time. If you're familiar with the play, Albee really strips away the facade we often present to the world and to ourselves for that matter. This is a couple, damaged to be sure, but who make no pretense of their disillusionment with the relationship: he, a self-loathing, stymied-in-his-career and resentful of his wife's expectations; she a frustrated and disappointed "climber" who, by virtue of the culture (1950s) is reliant on him (and resentful of it) for social/professional fulfillment.

There is much more to them, of course, but I guess for the honesty and clarity that they represent they would be, not necessarily a favorite couple, but one of the most memorable. (less)

The Obit Eater: Chapter 2

John Roland

New York had long disappeared from sight as the Henderson pitched in rolling seas toward Saint-Nazaire. Dozens of men lined the railings, sea sick, homesick and likely terrified at what was to come though they kept it to themselves. It was a miserable crossing with all eyes set on the open sea searching for the constant threat of German submarines.

Gail David has created characters that are injured and conflicted, but with warmth that made me cheer their successes. And being from back East, I enjoyed seeing the Arizona dust and a big sky of stars
