The first thing I'll do is simply get up, walk around the house briefly, maybe get a drink of water, coffee, or wine (depending on the time of day). Then sit back down and try again.

Next, I'll change spots. I'll move from the kitchen table to the couch to the office to the kitchen table again.

I may turn on a record for a song or two.

If that doesn't work, I'm okay calling it a day and trying again tomorrow, but being sure to watch or read something I enjoy in the interim to re-engage my creativity.(less)

What is needed for a 200-word piece is far different from 1000-word piece or a 50,000-word piece. Having opportunities to craft writings of different lengths is always a helpful way to stay fresh in the craft. (less)
