“Patient: Where is Carey Street?
Miss Ida: "Go stand out in the street and you'll find it.”
Toni Orrill, M.Ed.

“Lie to me again fool so God can hear it and deal with you.”
Toni Orrill, M.Ed.

“Satchie: Excuse me, I'm an enlisted man too. Nothing more was said. In the dark wooden room, Kenny and Satchie had the seethe of men with hardened hearts seered by the stench of burned human flesh. No smell like it, Satchie remembered. Gut-curling, episodic explosion of the soul that blasted even the bearest of men. So they hung in joints under Jax signs and Dixie beer relics where they drank their poison and enjoyed false remedy.”
Toni Orrill, M.Ed.

“And when the clouds come, I sink; and when the skies dawn, I rise.”
Toni Orrill

“Poppy held John's hand until it came time to walk alone behind older men, lick a wound instead of rely upon a kiss, or even begin to sense how people can be wicked, the world displeasing and all of life beaten by grace.”
Toni Orrill

“Now where are those babies? Cause you ain't messin' with them. You already messed up with their mama. Them kids comin' to Ma Mae's house. They can swim and abscound from the mess you made with their mother. They can eat and sleep without wonderin' why their mama's cryin in the next room. If Mr. So an So were here, you'd be dead like that varmit your mistress's wearin around her neck as she walks to the beauty parlor. But Papa ain't here no more, so I guess I gotta be momma and daddy, grandma and grandpa cause no one ain't home to care for creation.”
Toni Orrill

“Now git goin thru that screen door before I use it as a weapon. You're just a witless fool. That's what you are, a fool, Mae Mae said, shaking her head as if she had just discovered truth. An' put a log on that fire for me on your way out. Make yourself useful for something but misery. Cause you messed with the wrong MaMae. Look in my eyes. Philip, in all of his dejection and correction, had to look with respect. Yes, maam, he said sheepishly looking up from from the pine floor into her narrow, serious eyes. See I see right thru ya, she said, noddin her chin and holding her eyes like fire into his soul. An' the motives of your heart are stinkin up the place. I don't want the kids to smell it when they wake up from their naps. I don't know what's wrong with your generation. Missing men. No fathers. It disgusts me. At least in my time, women got some respect an alimony. An my daughter's got six kids and broke. But yours, they just gone missing. Hiding up in the woods with some women. Or abscounding to your cousin Satchie's trailer. Not supportin' them kids. Goin to jail. Servin their selves instead of the One who made 'em. It ain't no man problem, it's a sin probl'm. An people my age just sick that none of yall, no not one, know the capital letters of RESPONSIBILITY. Now take your lies and country jeans an drive down the gravel cause you ain't welcome here no more. The screen is locked, Ma Mae shouted as Philip walked blankly out the door.”
Toni Orrill

“I have learn'd Poppy that people come an' go. Only Jesus is your true friend. And even He had Judas. Git rid of your Judas. Like your sister. Marc has lost his mind. Buying one gift for her an' anoth'r for Cherie. That boy bet'r git himself home. There's ain't no blessing in sin, I tell ya. The devil roams, he prowls Poppy and a man's heart is fertile territory.”
