Born in California, Ren lived in three more states and one other country before finally settling down in Seattle, Washington. There with his wife and daughter and their two dogs and one of the heaviest cats in existence, he juggles a love of writing, music, science fiction and the occasional desire to make an honest buck.

After a college professor in his English department took a good look at his work and aspirations, and subsequently challenged him to find his voice out in the world and not in a classroom, Ren decided to interpret this challenge positively (and not in a "why don't you just sod off, you tosser!" sort of way) and has been working to find that very voice ever since.

First of all, lose the word "aspiring." Do, or do not. There is no aspire.

I had a professor in college – he was literally that teacher who taught Chaucer from memory, and looked a bit like a cross between a nutcracker doll and an older, wiser, Shakespeare. Good man. Tough teacher. He and I spoke one day and he told me the same thing I tell other authors: education will give you the framework, but only life will give you your stories. The stories you want to write – the lessons, the lives, the hearts and minds that make their way into your blank pages – exist out there, waiting to be drawn into your eyes and ears and feasted upon in your soul. Those elements can only exist in a life lived, as they pass through your readied mind. Live your life, learn everything and watch it all. Listen.

And don’t ever stop writing.

Frustrated by my apparent unwillingness to (permanently) kill off a favored anti-hero character I had in my "Chronicles of Aesirium" series, she demanded that my next book needed to be about killing him off. "He better be dead the next time I read about him," she said.

So, fine. But it's not just gonna be one book. It's going to be a trilogy.

I'm horrible. I know this.(less)

“A revolution begins with a single willful act, he told himself. Only these people don't seem entirely…willful.”
Ren Cummins, Steel & Sky

“Others have seen what is and asked why. I have seen what could be and asked why not. ”
Pablo Picasso, Pablo Picasso: Metamorphoses of the Human Form : Graphic Works, 1895-1972

“I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.”
Frank Herbert, Dune

message 1: by Jess

Jess Scott Hi Ren,

Thanks for your interest in the book! I've added your name to the list of reviewers, and will let you know once the PDF is ready.

I'm hoping I can finish by February 2011, but I will "take a bit more time" if necessary (currently in my last semester of college / looking forward to finishing).

Best,

Jess.
