Of course, this is somewhat simplistic because there was some/much overlap, mostly people who at one time belonged in one group later belonged in another. But the point isn't that members of the group moved between them because many/most member of what we'd call "angry mobs" in the 1790s were not politically active back in the 1770s (Albert Gallatin) comes to mind, and then he switched to the "founding fathers" during the Jefferson administration.

So it's not "right" to think of the groups as groups of people but rather as ideologies. Thus, an ideological group in one decade can have different members in another decade and some who belonged in one group could switch to another. It's a framework from which to view the Founding rather than an absolute grouping of individuals.(less)

“My design was not so much to contribute new facts as to shape the narrative in such a way as to emphasize relations of cause and effect that are often buried in the mass of details.”
