I was born and raised in Connecticut. In 1966 I went off to the Air Force for almost four years. Upon returning home I worked as a laboratory technician for a few years and later as an electrical engineer for many years. Most of my professional career was with The A. G. Russell Company, Bristol, CT, Digital Equipment Corp. (DEC) in Maynard, MA and Cisco Systems in MA. In 2004 I retired to Sarasota, FL with my wonderful life partner, Jane, and we lived happily ever after.
Well, no, not quite. I decided to hike the Appalachian Trail and things have not been the same since. The hike was interrupted by (minor book spoiler here)a six-artery heart bypass surgery. After three hundred days of recuperation I returned to the trail and finished the hi

I do have a problem disciplining myself to produce “x” amount of writing per day. I tend to take a random approach to writing and only write when it suits me. I suspect I could be referred to as a “binge,” writer, I'll write a huge amount one day and then go a few days, or weeks, writing nothing. My goal is to create a book that the reader will enjoy, a book that I would enjoy reading, one where they feel they are along with me on my true-life adventures. Judging by the various book reviews, I'd say that I have hit that target.(less)

Control of your own destiny. I don't punch a clock and don't have to commute. The downside of this is being your own boss, it can be tough.

Self imposed schedules can be very demanding and distractions can be overpowering. My second book, A Few More Zeroes is far behind schedule and I have nobody to blame but myself. Considering that, I had better get back to work and stop answering questions!(less)

Unfortunately, being a writer these days means that one has to be a jack-of-all-trades. Writing a book is the fun part, other things can just prove to be distractions, things such as doing taxes, maintaining computers, updating software, keeping track of things, etc.

One by-product of writing that I have come to enjoy, however, is the marketing side of things. It is fun to see which activities find Read more of this blog post »

“All of the authoritative books on bears seem to agree on one thing: if you're close enough to a bear to cause it to change its activity pattern, you're too close, and in possible danger.”
Dennis R. Blanchard, Three Hundred Zeroes: Lessons of the Heart on the Appalachian Trail

“Only on a few rare occasions, when I was either very tired or the weather was just terrible, did I sleep in shelters. The mice rule the shelters, and if there are no mice, that’s because there are lots of snakes eating the mice…take your pick.”
Dennis R. Blanchard, Three Hundred Zeroes: Lessons of the Heart on the Appalachian Trail

“Thousands of grasshoppers were jumping everywhere; I felt like I was walking through popping popcorn. These critters made me conscious of my surroundings, since many snakes eat grasshoppers. When it comes to rattlesnakes and copperheads, the locals there have a saying that the “Third person gets bit.” The theory is: the first person gets the snake’s attention, the second person gets the snake aggravated, and the third person gets bit. There were only two of us, but I didn’t feel like testing the theory.”
Dennis R. Blanchard, Three Hundred Zeroes: Lessons of the Heart on the Appalachian Trail

“Owners of dogs will have noticed that, if you provide them with food and water and shelter and affection, they will think you are god. Whereas owners of cats are compelled to realize that, if you provide them with food and water and shelter and affection, they draw the conclusion that they are gods.”
Christopher Hitchens, The Portable Atheist: Essential Readings for the Nonbeliever

“Have you ever dreamt about doing something totally foolish, something so absurd that perhaps you were afraid to tell anyone except possibly those closest to you? I harbored such a secret for most of my adult life — I secretly wanted to hike the Appalachian Trail [A.T.] from Georgia to Maine.”
Dennis R. Blanchard, Three Hundred Zeroes: Lessons of the Heart on the Appalachian Trail

“A few birds sang in the distance; everything was still. We were truly alone. This was it, no turning back now. Even if we did, it was a long walk home.”
