Zadie Smith’s essays remind me of David Foster Wallace’s essays: sometimes you wonder whether they’re better than the fiction.

Not every essay in here is a banger — sometime she sashays so far down a rabbit hole I can’t follow — but in general it is

I finished this book a few months ago but it’s only grown in my estimation since then. It feels so real — mostly because it’s autobiographical. And his journey through the Indian slums is one that will stick with me for my whole life.

Roberto Bolaño
“What a sad paradox, though Amalfitano. Now even bookish pharmacists are afraid to take on the great, imperfect, torrential works, books that blaze the path into the unknown. They choose the perfect exercises of the great masters. Or what amounts to the same thing: they want to watch the great masters spar, but they have no interest in real combat, when the great masters struggle against that something, that something that terrifies us all, that something that cows us and spurs us on, amid blood and mortal wounds and stench.”
Roberto Bolaño, 2666

Cormac McCarthy
“They were watching, out there past men's knowing, where stars are drowning and whales ferry their vast souls through the black and seamless sea.”
Cormac McCarthy, Blood Meridian, or the Evening Redness in the West

George Carlin
“Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that.”
George Carlin
