“It was the roads which made Harold’s moves possible, and they were to be of the utmost usefulness to the Conqueror in subsequently putting down rebellions. The three ‘Roman’ roads, Watling Street, Ermine Street and the Fosseway, were all broad enough to allow sixteen horsemen to ride abreast. The bushes on each side were kept cut back to deter ambushes and men could travel remarkably quickly along them. Harold’s movement, using horses, was probably around 40 miles in a day.”
