You say you haven't had an idea for years, and usually it's the stories inside us clamoring to get out that motivates us to write (regardless of whether we think we can SELL the story or not). Writing is hard work, too hard to bother with if you don't enjoy the process, in my opinion.

Beyond that, this is actually a very good time to be a write, with the recent (past several years) advent of e-publishing and print-on-demand publishing, which allows much easier entry into the marketplace. That said, I'll again emphasize that it's hard work, especially if you're determined to produce a book worth reading. That means, first, FINISHING a book, then polishing it for all you're worth, then having someone else edit it (because it's virtually impossible to spot your own mistakes). Then someone to do a final proofing after you've made needed editorial changes. Only at that point is your book ready to sell, either yourself on the various vendor platforms, or by submitting to traditional markets. (By the way, NEVER pay a publisher, no matter what promises they make. There are a lot of scams out there preying upon aspiring writers' dreams.)

If you publish yourself, you still need to have the book formatted (something you can learn to do or pay someone to do) and have a professional-looking cover designed.

I hope this helps, at least a little. Good luck!

“Books were so much easier to relate to than people.”
Brenda Hiatt, Starstruck

“Kindness isn't so difficult, when the object is worthy.”
Brenda Hiatt, Rogue's Honor

“It's not like she actually said I couldn't go. She just lectured me a little—about what boys like you expect from girls like me." I slanted a teasing glance up at him. What had gotten into me, that I was suddenly so comfortable, so brave, around him? He laughed out loud, a delicious sound. "Boys like me? You can tell her I don't expect anything at all. Though—" He went suddenly serious— "I may hope, a little." I discovered I wasn't quite brave enough to ask what he hoped, though the intensity in his eyes gave me a clue. My heart started beating faster.”
Brenda Hiatt, Starstruck
