Flathead Lake is a large natural lake in northwest Montana and is the largest natural freshwater lake by surface area that is west of the Mississippi in the contiguous United States. The lake is a remnant of the ancient, massive glacial dammed lake, Lake Missoula of the era of the last interglacial.

Recreation on and around the lake includes sailing, powerboating, waterskiing, swimming, fishing, picnicking, and camping. In the summer, roadside stands along the east shore offer a variety of locally grown cherries, apples, plums, and other fruits. There are numerous motels and rental cabins in addition to public campgrounds scattered all around the shoreline.
