A beast of an undertaking: Munchkin . Throughout the years, the constant has always been Munchkin  – while my design handiwork is at the forefront of a few versions (lookin' at you Munchkin CCG , Munchkin Wonderland , and Munchkin Spell Skool!) – this game has permeated my day-to-day tasks over the years. With good reason, too. It's a fan favorite, and the subject matter of its pun-fueled jokes can expand to just about any corner of the imagination. Now, my next statement is one that I hope you hold tight to your torches and sheathe your pitchforks for: I had never heard of Munchkin prior to working here! Soon after joining the team, I found out just how popular the game was, and I could instantly see the spark in a fan's eyes when I'd talk about the brand and the info I could share about upcoming titles. We constantly have projects in the works for Munchkin because it's important to us, too. As already announced, our newest version,  Munchkin   Second Edition is one that we had wrestled with internally for quite some time. I'll remind Steve and others of this post that we now think of fondly; it's one of those reminders of why the old saying "never say never" exists. Steve put in countless hours to make  Second Edition  a game that the fans of the first edition would still enjoy – while also making it easier for new players to join in on the fun. Upon my very first playtest of Second Edition , it made me very happy to know that now casual gamers (like me) can be introduced to Munchkin  and immediately start playing without needing any prior introduction or the first edition of the game. I hope fans of the original Munchkin give this new edition a try   – it's absolutely compatible with their well-loved sets. (There will be a one-page upgrade guide available on the landing page soon, along with the  Second Edition  rules to convert your original edition cards to  Second Edition  playability.  You will be seeing a lot more promotion of Second Edition in the coming months, and hopefully you are able to play it at an upcoming convention! Some early, not finalized, hand-made playtest sets have already crept into the wild, and they've gotten positive feedback from fans. The team put in a ton of work to bring this new edition to life, and we all hope you love it as much as we do.

I'm sure by now you've heard about the daring-but-kind-of-silly jewel heist at the Louvre in October. It's not really related, but I was amused that, according to PC Gamer (summarizing from French newspaper Libération), the password on the Louvre's security system was:

Yeahhhh. I feel kind of bad about the times I've yelled at movies for having crazy-obvious one-word passwords, rather than whatever random 20-character protection I force my password-storing software to keep track of . . . which, of course, I keep secure with "password."

As an aside, our Daily Illuminator uploader automatically capitalizes the first letter of each headline word, meaning I needed to specifically "hack in" to tweak the coding and make its joke work . . .

It's Thanksgiving here in the United States, which is a time when most of us are enjoying food, family, friendship, football, and – um – fun games.

Before we at Steve Jackson Games went our separate ways for the weekend, I invited the Secret Masters to share anything they were grateful for . . . in a maneuver that was definitely not a clever-but-touching way to fill a Daily Illuminator slot while I'm also scrambling to prepare for the holiday. I'm not sure I have formatting emphatic enough for the DON'T TRY THIS AT HOME element of today's post, but . . .

Wow, are my creative juices flowing after watching this YouTube video from Shake the Future, where he makes a metal vise in his apartment from scratch, melting iron in a microwave to pour it into molds. It's an utterly amazing process video to spark visions of what, potentionally, a tabletop home-gadgeteering hero could accomplish . . . just make sure it is NOT YOUR HOME.

The holidays are nearly upon us, and the offices and warehouse of Steve Jackson Games will be closed for several days around Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Day. In November, we will be closed from November 27 through November 30. Shipping for orders placed on those dates will resume December 1. In December and January, we will be closed December 24 through January 4. Shipping will start again on January 5. For anyone who would like to place an order to be delivered in time for Christmas, we recommend ordering by midnight CST on December 18 for the best chance of on-time delivery.

This one might be a bit of an obscure dive even for me, but I found this video fascinating. In it, YouTube creator Joekutz's Workbench manages to get green LEDs to light not by any kind of direct power current, but by ambient electrical fields: static electricity, holding wires up to various objects, etc.

The effect basically looks like "power from nothingness" – which is just the sort of thing that the Illuminati would encourage, suppress, or both at the same time . . .

Now, if you're looking for inspiration for a Dungeon Fantasy RPG game or an adventure for The Fantasy Trip , by all means: Poke around . . . via your imagination.

Otherwise, I don't know what kind of year anyone else has been having, but "tomb that opened because a sinkhole exposed its unreadable secrets" fits all too well with the vibe I've been dealing with in 2025 – and that's not good. Just . . . just please, leave it alone.
